I didn't read through the entire thread, I also believe you that its oil I have blown turbo's before and the smoke can be described as white or gray.

Do you pre-mix? What kind are you using (indemsu made my engine smoke like a crack head with more that 1oz per gallon) could you be using too much or the wrong kind of premix?

Here is how to test the turbo for oil leaks, its really easy:

1: Take the banjo bolt out of the oil supply line to the turbo, and put a plug in it so that no oil is going to the turbo.

Reach in through the intake side of the turbo and hold the shaft with a pair of vice grips (this is really optional if the car is just going to be idling, turbo's don't spin at idle anyways)

Start the car and warm it up to the point you see smoke without revving the engine.

Is the smoke still there, well if it is then it can't be the turbo.

Bryan at BNR said a restrictor pill would help too (i had the wrong gasket for the oil return line and it blocked half the oil flow, along with other issues.) Look into that.

I run no restrictor on my journal T04R up to 80psi oil pressure with no problems.

Your best bet is to just take it off and look at the turbo. If there is no sign of an oil leak in the turbo, then it is in the engine. That vise grip method sounds pretty risky.

Hope you get it ironed out soon.

Umm, every turbo I've ever had has spun at idle, journal bearing, ball bearing, ebay pieces of **** I experimented with, stockers, everything. I wouldn't go clamping vice grips on that bad boy.

Decent theory and might yeild some results, but I certainly wouldn't try that.

And yes - you shouldn't need a restrictor with that turbo running stock oil pressure.

acctualy ive heard from some guys in the single turbo section say that if you have a big turbo with stock ports the turbo may not spin at idle..and mine dosent sometimes but it still dosent seem right to try that visegrip thing...

Mine don't spin at idle....

A vice grip on the compressor nut to prevent spinning isn't going to hurt anything, it doesn't need to be that tight, as long as he don't try to drive the car.

Ive done this 3 times, unless your an idiot it will be accomplished with no damage to the turbo. Though I suppose it would have allot to do with the shape of the compressor nut

how hard is it to take off the TID, and look for oil?
- see any? problem found!
I know it's prolly a pain int he *** to take off the DP, but if they're no oil on the compressor side, check the turbine.

If there's no oil in either place, stop wasting your time w/ the turbo, cuz that's not your problem.
