Slow power windows

Hey guys, I have a 90 GXL. Car has about 157K miles on it. Ever since I got the car at 76K, the power window had been slow. The driver side dont seem to be that bad, but the passenger is really slow, especially going up. Is there anyway I can fix that? I also have this problem of the windows not going up and down even if i hit the button. I think that is hte problem with the switch. I will clean them when i take the panel off, but anyway. If you guys have an idea on how to fix the speed of the power windows, please let me know. My friend's 91 is doing the same thing

Most of the time slow windows are one of three things on non-accident, good battery/alt/ground related cars:

(in most likely order)

#1 dirty track/external wiper/ window assmbly (remove inner door panel, clean with a degreaser, re-lube)

#2 switch contacts dirty or going bad (replace or clean)

#3 motor went swimming. (replace or dis-assemble and clean)

ok, i cleaned the pass side contacts, but not the driver side ones yet. could the driver side contacts cause the pass side window to not work? and where exactly in the door is the window motor located if i wanted to take it out and **** around with it?

Yes, The grounds for the passengers side window motor and switch go through the drivers switch.

Dont switch only control if it works or not, not the speed?

usually, but the switch contacts get worn out / dirty stopping the full amount of current getting through. you can try clean them with contact cleaner, but replacing with a new switch would work better.

I have the same issue with my pass. side window. If I hold the switch up, and jiggle the window (usually tilting it forward I think...) it "catches" and goes up fine. Driver's side is no problem.

Well, since we are on the topic of broken window switches, I figure I'll post my problems. First off, mine haven't worked since I got the car, so I have no idea how they are supposed to work. First thing is on the driver side, the switch on the right opens the driver window, and the one on the left doesn't do anything. The passanger window switch doesn't work either. I have no clue whats causing it, and how the switches ended up controlling oppisite windows. Also, what is the little switch behind the other two on the drivers side?

And about cleaning the contacts, what contacts do you mean? The ones in the plastic connector?

I had some trouble with my switches once; but after disassembling them, I cleaned the contacts with contact cleaner only to find that a small burn spot was present... this I cleaned with a small, very fine file.
For AreExSeven: the small switch behind the two window switches is to prevent or allow the passenger door switch to operate the passenger window (very handy if young children are in the car)

the little switch on the drivers side controls the power on the passenger side window switch. on = pass side switch has power to make the window go up and down, off = no power to the pass side switch. the contacts we are referring to are inside the switch housings. simply pop the whole plastic piece, holding the switches, out of the arm rest area, and once u have these off, u have to unscrew the switch housings on the driver side switch, and the pass side switch should just pop apart, but be careful not to break it. inside the housing u will find the contacts, simply clean these pretty good, and put it all back together.

not really sure about why your stuff is switched around, but good luck.

also, Tree, u might need to take off the door panel and tighten the bolt holding the window to the middle track that the window goes up and down on. i need to do this to mine also, because i had loosened the bolt when i was trying to get my window working again a while back, and forgot to tighten it back all the way.
