single piston to 4 piston upgrade - possible?
anyone know if those of us with the single piston brakes can swap with the 4 piston ones as an upgrade?
if it's possible, is there anything else i need for the upgrade (other than the 4 piston lines)?
thanks,
john

You can if you have the 5 lug wheels, if you have the 4 lug wheels, you will have to replace them to the 5 lugs. Everything is a bolt on, including the 3rd gen calipers, you will need:
2-Calipers
2-Hard Lines (this one goes between the calipers and the the regular rubber brake lines or SS lines)
2-rubber brake lines or SS brake lines
2-brake pads
Thats it & you will love it!!

Yep.
To do the front, you need the 4-piston brake calipers, the brake lines, and the hubs/front rotors.
Same thing goes for the rear. A good place to get everything you need:

I thought that all the 90+'s (maybe 89?) had only "heavy duty" 4 piston and 5 lug wheels?
I thought the single was ony standard on the base model ealier versions....

thanks guys!
yeah, my profile is correct, i've got a 91 n/a coupe. all wheels have 5 lugs on them.
if my car is supposed to have the 4 piston brakes, then the previous owner must have "upgraded" to the single piston ones...#$&&%er
thanks again for the info!

89+ GTU cars had 1-pot fronts, with 5-lug wheels and rotors. The rotors are the same diameter as the 4-pot cars. The calipers are a bolt-on! Since your car's a 91, it came with 1-pot fronts - in that year, only the 'verts and TIIs had the big brakes.
In fact, (rummages around) I happen to have a complete set of 4-pot brakes right here! They came off an 88 TII. Wanna buy 'em?

nextime i'll check first to make sure stuff fits before buying it, i just happened to get lucky this time.

Are the rear vented rotors and solid rotors the same diameter or did they change them? Can you put vented rotors on a car with solid rotors? And are the calipers in the rear on cars with four piston calipers any different than the cars with single pistons?

The rotors on the 4 piston and single-piston fronts are different diameter. The rear rotors are vented on cars with the 4-piston fronts, and un-vented on single-pot fronts.

Silkworm: thanks man... (I still haven't finished my printing of the '89 FSM... )
ajsuper7: I think they may have been an option available from the factory... i dunno... 'cause my 89GX has 5 Lug wheels, 1 piston brakes, and no LSD (so far as I can tell....) ....I think the GX is the mix'n'match model!
