I deleted as much misinformation and crap as I could from this thread without butchering it.
As posted many times before, a stock TII is supposed to use regular 87 octane as specified in the owners manual.
Modded cars running higher boost and/or more timing may require a higher octane fuel.

Thanks for the help guys. My car is completely stock except for cat back exhaust. I am still trying to get it running the way I want it to. Then slowly get into the good stuff like boost controller and fuel cut defencer and all the goodies.

There's an aux injection section of the forums that has plenty of information on that. Basically high boost turbos need extra cooling to avoid detonation and you can do that with extra fuel (via tuning), alcohol or water. Alcohol or water cool more per gallon, but then you got to add it to your gas somehow, like aux injection. IMO gasoline is a convenient liquid to cool with (and the one all car manufacturers use), but it's hardly the ideal.
A higher octane gas allows higher temperatures without detonation. Otherwise it is completely unnecessary.
The Mazda Owner's manual recommends against using more than 10% alcohol. Most pump gas nowadays is already 8-10%. More alcohol can, over time, damage the fuel system and corrode the inside of the engine. Even when added via aux injection, it can still corrode the inside of the engine.

And I, like many others who own an RX-7, have lost an apex seal on a "proper tune" due to failure that had absolutely nothing to do with a fuel or ignition map.
PS: I'm not trying to be inflammatory, just pointing out that the way you stated that was pretty ignorant... I know you know your **** (any one who has seen your build knows that), and respect your opinions, I was just setting the record straight so us AI dudes don't look bad. =)

I'm pretty sure most people who do auxiliary injection set ups don't do it as a band-aid for poor tuning, but for added safety/performance benefits. I'm spending less money on gas (alcohol and fuel combined) than before, running more aggressive timing than before, and more boost than before thanks to my methanol. But whatever, if that equates to "throwing random liquids into my engine to make it survive" to you, then I'm sorry you're missing out.
