Better that the Rx 7? Are you frikkin insane??? There is no zx nissan or datsun that handles better thatn a rex. Believe me, I've driven them all from the 240 through both generations of 300's turbo and non, none of them are near as good as the rex not even close.

LOL... ok.... There are fanboys, and then there are Fanboys. The Z, from 69 thru 79, was a pretty good handling car, with only minor changes in suspension between the years. I used to drive my ex-GF's 79 RX7, and even after I had replaced a number of things on that car (bushings, struts, ect) It didnt feel quite the match of the Z, any year, in good, stock form. The rear end never felt completely settled unless the road was flat and straight. I have been in an 83 that had some perf parts, but nothing crazy.... and I have to admit that I was impressed, but I dont know how it would have compared to a stock 83. To say that no nissan ever matched up to an RX7 is kinda mis-leading, and in my experience not completely true. Look, the RX7 started production when the S30 Z was giving way to the S31. Mazda intended to compete head to head, but not only had 10 years of Z production to study, but ended up competing against the ZX, which was a completely different beast than than the 2(4,6,8)0-Z. The 1979 ZX couldnt get out of its own way, had a sports touring suspension, (meaning it was mediocre for either sports or touring) was some 400 to 600 pounds heavier, less horse, and worse emissions. Of all the people I have known over the years who road or track raced, I never heard any fear of the RX7 as such.... respect, but thats about it. Now, there were cars that outclassed the Z... but they were usually considerably higher priced, or had several times the worth of the Z in mods. Any non-biased person I ever asked seemed to feel in general that it came down to preference, and how you wanted to approach performance in a car.

The blanket statements of one type over another type always make me a little squinty-eyed.... lol.... no offense... but I would hope someone here would say something similar if I were to come in say the Z was untouchable to anything wearing the Mazda badge. Fitness stain put it well. And I think most level headed (or mature, lol) Z owners would agree. Regardless.... for some odd reason or another, I have only really gone head to head against an RX7 once... and I have been nervous ever since.... lol even tho that time it was a car with mods that probably ran in excess of $20,000, and looked very little like an RX7 to begin with... = )
