Question Short throw shifter

Where can you get a short throw shifter for an fc and are they really worth the money.

You can get one at mazdatrix.com or there is a c's short shifter. I've heard the c's doesn't make the shifter any lower but makes the shifts shorter apart. Whether or not its worth it is up to you.

I got the mazdatrix short shifter and it was worth it to me. Throw is only 2.5-3 inches from 1st to 2nd and it sits really low. It is VERY tight at first, but after a week or two it gets broken in nicely. get one

I agree....I have the Mazdatrix one and it is great! You'll wonder how you drove without it after having it for a few weeks.

Mazdatrix says that their short shifters rattle on about 1/3 of the cars they are installed in, and that it is car specific and not the shifter. The rattling shifter can be put into a different car and not rattle, while a non-rattling shifter can be put into a car that had a rattling one and rattle as well. I've only driven an rx with a non-rattling short shifter (not my car) so i don't know how it sounds. How loud is the rattle and would it keep you from using one?

I also have the Mazdatrix shifter, I haven't had any rattles or any problems at all with it. I agree that it's tight for the first few hours, but after that...there isn't anything better!

I've driven cars with short shifters and I personally don't care for 'em. The gear pattern is so tight that it's trickier to shift quickly - it's too easy to end up in the wrong gear or no gear at all.

Hell, it's not like the stock gearbox is a truck with foot-long gear throws or anything.

Ok, im kinda confused. Exactly *how* does a short shifter make the shift accually shorter? I thought the only reason it seemed shorter was because the hieght of the shifter was shorter therefore the distance will end up being shorter.

I bought the Mazdatrix, and it's awesome! I have the one out of 3 that rattles, but its not bad, just kind of annyoing at first...not loud or anything, and its OK now because I know it's a normal thing....<<shrugs>> I'd say go w Mazdatrix

Good question. The height of the shifter IS often shorter, but the real advantage of a short shifter is that the fulcrum is placed higher up on the shift rod. This gives you more mechanical advantage and creates a longer shift throw on the bottom(transmission side), and hence a shorter throw on the top(shift **** side). I don't have a picture(sorry) but I'm sure someone could post what a short throw rod looks like, and point out what I'm talking about.

Don't have any pics, but nice answer MtcRacer. Even using proper terms (instead of it changes the bottom part of the stick to make it longer and...catch my drift).

I have the C's, it shifts really well! I have also heard really good things about the mazdatrix one. For availibility reasons I would go with mazdatrix.

My stock shifter rattles now, and it's kinda loud...but all I do is keep my hand on the shifter, and it goes away. I'm planning on buying the mazdatrix short shifter. And if it rattles just like, the stock one, I could care less because the shift throw will be a little over half as long as the stock shift throw. Stock throw is 6 inches, short shifter is 3.5 inches. Now that's what I call a shorter shift.
