short in system?

I installed a reman in my 91 vert about a month ago and I didn't have a problem till yesterday. I came out to my garage and smelled something burning. So i popped the hood and found out to my disgust that the starter wires were getting friend and smoke was coming out of it so I disconnected the negative battery cable. Is this a symptom of a short? How do I go about finding it? I did install a new driver side power window switch but I do not think that's the problem since the driver's side window works now. Thanks for the help.

bad grounds to engine can also cause that.
