Short(er) shifter. Check it out! PICS!

How many of you have done this? I made this one about 4 years ago. Basically you take the upper metal threaded piece off, remove all the rubber stuff, grind it down and make it smooth. Then you need to rethread it. Screw your shifter on and you have a short shifter. It does not change the fulcrum, however the **** travels a shorter distance and it is much lower. If you feel like you are driving a truck with the tall 86-88 shifter, you might give this a try. The only downside is that it might shake or rattle a little more since the rubber is all removed. If you have accesss to an extra, give it a try!

That is not actually short shifter. Yes, the **** is down so it makes changing speeds shorter, but the point of short shifter is in that ball down at the bottom. To have a shorter shifting, ball needs to be further down and that's when you'll have really short shifting. That what you have done doesn't really help much. I have one and i compared stock to short shifter and the ball is 1 inch longer apart.

I did this too... I like the difference even though I know it isn't a true "short shifter". I didn't re-therad it though- I just used some setscrews on either side of the collar on my aftermarket shift ****.

I am going to attempt to make my own short shifter though- my extending the shaft at the bottom.

Um, if you read my post a little more carefully you would notice that I said "It does not change the fulcrum, however the **** travels a shorter distance and it is much lower"! Thanks for repeating what I said though. Read then reply..... :-)
