Redline is past the HP/Torque peak for all stock cars. Redline is set as the maximum safe RPM for the engine. You should shift at or just past the power peak.

I used to have the same problem, but at the suggestion of mazdaspeed7 ??? I think? I took apart the intake manifold and port matched it. I ground down the chunk in the plastic elbow in front of the throttle body, and cleaned the throttle really well too. Now it pulls through 7k on up to 8k with only a slight drop(barely noticeable) at around 7k. Even in third gear I rev to 8k (100mph at this point ) Definitely worth the effort, as it smoothed the acceleration a bit too.

question: when you guys are just cruising, what RPM do you shift at and what RPM do you cruise at?

As well, where, approximately, is the power peak on an '89 N/A?

Power shift

its ok to power shift as long as you do it right. match the speed of your synchro-gear to the speed of the out put shaft and you can power shift all day without damage.

I launch my TII at 6000 and shift at 7200...but I shift kindly, especially into second. That's probably what's keeping me out of the 13s, but it keeps my tranny alive.

I'd like to hear how this is possible?
There is no such thing as doing it "right" - when upshifting, the rev match to previous gear is always going to be lower on the RPM scale.&nbsp Explain to me how do you rev-match the engine with the transmission if you don't lift on the gas pedal???&nbsp Last time I checked, leaving your foot on the gas pedal and popping the clutch will cause the engine revs to INCREASE, not decrease.&nbsp So explain to me how having the engine revs always INCREASING in this sitaution be able to rev match for the upshift if you need to DECREASE the revs.

Please people, "power shifting" is hard on the transmission and the synchros.&nbsp It's an idiotic thing to do to a modern synchromesh transmission just to win a race.&nbsp This causes unnecessary wear and tear on your drivetrain just because you want to win a race.&nbsp Don't be complaining you blew up your transmission messing around with power shifting.&nbsp If you happen to misshift trying to do this, you're going to almost guarantee kill the synchro in the next gear or even take out the gear itself.

If you wanna be like TheBigOne and nitroracer and take the chance on ruining your transmission, go right ahead; I can only give you my opinion on why this is not recommended.&nbsp Just be aware of the consequences - remembers, there is nothing free about performance and going faster.

Full-out agreeance with RETed... Better to learn how to shift PROPERLY.... and get good at that... than to kill ur tranny...

Oh yes, but at least with a rotary you don't have to worry about the valves floating from the over-rev killing the engine too!! Ah, the days of my youth.

Not only that, you'll burn up your clutch in no time.
