shifter roll pin removal
hey guys i am trying to remove the roll pin to replace the shifter spring but i want to make sure im doing this correct,
Do i push the roll pin in so it could come out through the back or do i have to pull it out of its position? And what is the proper tool size
I removed a good condition spring from my broken transmission but i was unable to remove it the proper way and i just broke the change control case, but i at least got the control lever end off and spring in good condition

I hope these pics help for anyone trying to replace the spring, the roll pin was a pain to remove, the tool i used is a transfer punch set, I used 3 different sizes, push the pin all the way through and it will pop out behind, remove the change control case by removing the 4 bolts on top, use a rubber mallet to move it up to give you enough space to remove the control lever end

I just did this recently as well. I didnt know that when you remove the four bolts on the shift linkage casing that you need to pry up 1/4" to be able to slide it back to make more room to slide the shifter block off the shaft. (as least i had to do that) It was a little pain in the *** but i got it done.

Sorry I missed your question, but you did just fine it seems.
Yes, a proper sized punch is crucial, for others who may attempt this. You want the punch to be straight, not tapered or have a point at the end, so you don't force the pin open against the block.
Others have threaded a screw (with or without tapping a thread) and pulled the pin out.
Also for others doing this...always double check the spring is the right way and don't loose the little springs and ***** that apply force when you push the lever to the right (for 5th/reverse). The big spring applies a lesser force to center the shift lever away from 1st/2nd.

the smaller phillips screw drivers are usually perfect for this job, they are the right diameter, and the point keeps it centered in the roll pin, its not really nice on the screwdriver, but it works better than the punch
