Shift light question

so.kind of a stupid question..but i guess it makes sense?

i was simply wondering, is the shift light programmed to go off when you reach a certain RPM(this is at high rpm) or does it go off based on when your reaching the peak rpm?

im wondering this because i got over 7k when i was gunning it, not realizing it of course, and it never went off, i almost got to 8 until i noticed and still it never went off..so i was wondering..with some upgrades can the car reach over 7k without maxing out or whatever(keep in mind in a noob with cars on these kind of things) i guess some enlightenment on it would help. when i gunning it am i able to hit over 7k? i didn't feel any hesitation when i went i guess thats why i didn't catch it..that and not hearing the loud buzzing when the shift light comes on..so any help would be great..i know im not the best at explaining this but i hope you guys know where im coming from.

the shift light? the shift light goes off around 2,500 or 3,000 depending on the gear. the red line buzzer goes off when you get to the last 1000 rpms on your tach, the shaded region. if thats not going off then its probably a bad ground, or blown fuse, or the wire was cut in the past to kill the coolent buzzer. the 2 use the same buzzer. check the fsm in the faq and then go check it out.
hope it helped

I drove my friends rx-7 his is an 88 I think so it has the shift light. It seems like it makes you shift way too early, my car is an 89 and it does't have that. I shift at like 3-4k. I'm not sure if it ever goes off untill you shift. But I think it's pretty annoying, glad my car doesn't have it.

The shift light is for achieving better fuel mileage. When it comes on, shift to the next higher gear.
