Microtech is a brand name, and there are several current and outdated models. Most people consider Microtech a decent cheap brand of EMS, as it is not very robust, but it has proven to run rotary engines well over many years. One thing to watch out for is that Microtech pre-sets the more complicated parameters for a particular engine at their factory in Australia. While this makes it easier to tune, it also makes it a nightmare if you buy a used EMS that is pre-set for a different engine type because it must be sent back to Australia for reconfiguration which costs several hundred dollars. Therefore, make sure you buy one set up for "12A or 13B Series 4 crank setup, Bosch coils x4". You may also want to check the model type to make sure you are not buying something that is horribly outdated. The Microtech subforum listed above by need RX7 can help you with this. You may also want to post in that forum to verify that you are getting a good deal for your money.

When you write "finally came across my money to get my computer" it sounds like you have been shopping for a while. If this is the case, and you have never heard of Microtech, then that makes me think that you are totally clueless because it is probably the most popular brand of EMS for our cars. It is fine to be totally clueless, as we all start there, but I just want to make sure that you understand what you are getting yourself into. For example, do you realize that it totally replaces the stock ECU for engine functions, therefore rather than making small changes to the existing system like a piggyback ECU, you must completely program the fuel injector pulsewidths and ignition timing tables, recalibrate the TPS, set the idle and off-idle, tune the acceleration enrichment, set the timing advance, set the temperature compensation values, etc.? Do you realize that most of the tuning tools will require a laptop computer? Do you realize that you could destroy your engine if you screw up the tuning, and that a professional usually charges $500-1,500 to tune an engine for you?

Also, had you used the forum Search function for "Microtech", you would have come up with thousands of hits.

OK, that model is current. Just make sure it is set up for the CAS and aftermarket coils if that is what you plan on using.

You can download the software and the manual from the internet.

A good brand would be Motec or Autronic. Microtech is a cheap brand, but it works.

I have had two COPs on my F150 truck fail in the last 2 years, they are $100 each, and the plug dies when the coil dies so you need to replace that too. I was planning on using COPs on one of my RX-7s, but now I am not sure how reliable that will be. You may be better off checking in the Microtech subform to see if there is a better alternative to COP.

There isn't a factory pre-set for fuel injectors. You set those yourself by adjusting the staging and the pulsewidth during tuning. Just be sure to check the manual to make sure you set up everything correctly based on the impedance of your injectors.

Please remember that while the Microtech is a solid and reliable ECU, proven over many years, it is also years behind the times.

The Microtech does NOT offer the following which is standard for all ECUs on the market:
-saving maps to disk
-closed loop operation
-user configurable I/O
-3D timing maps
-user configurable engine parameters

That said, the Microtech seems to be the only ECU that does not suffer ignition noise.

I'm saying that you should look at more modern ECUs before you go to the Microtech. I run one on my car and I am happy with it, but I sure wish that I had the stuff I listed. The only thing that keeps me from swapping ECUs to something more capable is the reliability of the Microtech. I have not installed a Microtech since I wired up mine. My next project will run a Megasquirt.

The closest modern EMS in price would be the Haltech Platinum 1000. Moving up in price a bit more would be the AEM universal and Wolf V4X universal:

You could also use an adapter kit to install a PFC, although I am not sure I would call it modern.

It would be a downgrade when compared to a Microtech LT-10s.

Agreed^^^ Its also very limited

You can find many used (and perfectly fine) EMS for your car for a decent price, you just gotta know what you want. You're on the right track more or less. I will be running an Apexi Power FC like Evilaviator posted in #2 above

You can find those complete with everything you need for right around $1K
