Sell it or repair it? 86 mazda rx-7
I have a 1986 non-turbo rx-7 with 168xxx miles on it.
Currently the u-joints on front drive shaft are worn so $266 to replace
I will also need a new transmission which Im having trouble finding but from what I hear they are around $500. Then there is the body work that needs to be done because my mom hit my car then someone hit me in a parking lot and someone hit me when I was entering the highway. Soooo that is about $2500
All in all 3500 to fix everything and have it up and running and looking nice is it worth it?
Also let me know if you know where i could find a NEW 86 manual transmission for a non turbo.
And if you think i should sell it how much should I sell it for? remember body damage on the door and fender and its not too bad...and a worn front u joint

If you sold the car would you replace it with another RX7?
If so, the biggest factor would be the chassis...is the '86 worth fixing up (ignore the mechanicals) or would you better off starting with a better shell?
Body/paint are easily the most expensive part of a restoration, anything to defray those costs (like starting with a better chassis) puts you ahead.
Also, paint/bodywork is the most time consuming of all the projects, can you live without the car for a while?
You can assume that any other RX you buy will need some mechanical work, maybe big, maybe minor, so it's the body you should concentrate on.

When my joints went, I bought a used driveshaft for my 86 vert from a buddy. I have the old one but you can't replace the u joints. So I talked to a local machine shop and they will bore out the yokes to fit commonly available bearings. The vert driveshaft is different and hard to find, it seems.

Used driveshaft is under $100 easily and a used n/a transmission can be had for $100-150.
I have a 86 as well, i have replaced the rearend and the driveshaft so far. Pilot bearing or throwout bearing is making noise so it needs to come out eventually. Its a old car, all fc's are old now. Whatever rx you get will have problems like this sometime in its life. Just hold onto the car if the engine is healthy.

Rebuilds/restore projects always cost much more than you planned.
How much do you currently have in 7? In my area you could probably get $900 to $1300 for it the way it is. An NA in nice condition with 150000 miles on it only goes for like $3000 - $3500.
But, sometimes it is hard giving up on a 7. This I know from personal experience. I have thousands of dollars more in my 7 than it will ever be worth.

Fix it. Keep it. You will Not regret it. In fact you will be glad you did. These cars are getting more rare. And newer cars more expensive and complex that comes with HYPE to sell them. They are NOTHING like the cars made in the 80s from japan.
If your tran was auto go 5 speed with 5speed drive shaft. They are like 200 bucks if that for NA trans. Drive are out there.. Not that spendy for a used drive shaft even

Keep it, work on it. You will learn lots of things. Patience, respect for money, hard work pays off. Plus it could be fun. Most girls I know don't care to work on their cars but I do and almost all guys like fixing things. You might also.

Might be under $100 but shipping will prob be like $400 lol and I'd perfer a brand new one that way there is some sort of manufacturer guarantee if I buy one on here I might get fucked out of a lot of cash.

chances are your driveshaft is just as worn as mine the only thing im really looking for is a manual 5 sp transmission for a 1986 n/a and chances are your transmission has about the same miles on it as mine 168xxx.....I'd perfer to buy the transmission new from an online company but dont know where to start. no offense but the shipping for a transmission is really expensive and if i were to buy it off you and then it gets here and its garbage then i just blew a **** ton of money on nothing.

Just thought id try to help. It has 115k miles and if you seriously want to waste your money buying a brand new 86 transmission go right ahead.
But I understand your point of view. If you don't trust people on here with money how will you trust them in giving financial advice? Lol

New trans mounts - 50$
New trans saddle with new rubber - 100$
Buying na trannies for 20$ a piece till you find one you're happy with - Priceless.
