Screwed up idle
Hey Guys
I've been working on a street ported FC that looks to be a T2 engine with N/A rotors and 1990 intake without the 6 port setup hooked up. The car had the spark plugs backwards and the leading ones only finger tight. Now that we finished the work the car runs good and pulls hard but has a strange idle problem which is not there all the time. The idle problem was there before we put the spark plugs in the right spots, so that rules out anything weve done. The idle will bounce up and down from about 900 to 1500 rpm. Then below 900 to almost stalling. The owner of the car said he was told the tps should be replaced, but this seems like it might be something else. I checked for any engine codes and there is none.
Has any one else had this problem?

Chris,
Lots of good idle info on this page. One of the other guys posted it here before when I had some idle problems.

TPS could defenitely be the culprite. I would first check to see if it is set correctly though. http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm
Here is a factory manual online. The factory manual has a good method for checking if the TPS has gone bad. The portion you want is Fuel and Emissions Control Systems. Besides the TPS I would check for vacuum leaks, also I would check a few other sensors in that chapter of the manual I listed above. All you need to check most the things is a multimeter.
For TPS adjustment, there are countless FAQs on how to do this. Just remember one thing, many FAQs will say to build a test lamp out of two light bulbs, I do not recommend this method as the light bulbs draw too much current. The best (in my opinion) and easiest way is to use a test lamp out of LEDs. You can either but the factory Mazda test lamp from mazdatrix.com, or you can build your own. There is also a method using multimeters, but you need two of them, and it seems like more of a pain to me, not to mention more expensive if you have to buy another multimeter.
