Hey I still got the whole setup. It ruled like you wouldn't believe, and the car is not the same without the screw charger and rotary under the hood. Large street port and wired open 6 ports with 8+ psi in less than half a second at 1500 rpm is something you have to feel to believe, and the fucking sound......
Someday it will probably go into a Gsl-Se when I can afford to play with rotaries again. I learned just about every porting mistake possible by doing it wrong myself. :D |
Eric, is the process of taking the s5's apart the same as the s4's?

Now, in THEORY this should look really good and clean--however, from my experience and looking at your picture, it doesn't... The reason is that you lose a major point of contrast on your back-end. Contrast is very important to seperate certain items and to draw *other* items together. Without contrast in your back-end I think the aesthetics suffer dramatically. Therefore there's nothing to offset your taillights, so all attention is naturally drawn to their specific appearance, which is what you want to AVOID if you have obviously painted something that doesn't look like it should be painted... My point is: Your taillights would look better if you painted the emblems black. ;) |

Looks bitchin to me! I think it would be really clean on a nice black car...(black is the only real color for a car, everything else is just an excuse...)

but that's of course a matter of taste ;) |
Nice work Erik. I like your innovative look!
I'd be especially Interested In some form of write up or link for sanding/polish/clearcoat the s5 tails. Would be a nice touch to do. |

I think there's a chance that would look really good--especially with the *depth* added to the back-end after doing my modernizing mod. :dunno:
as i want my 7 to be a practical car, i'm not a fan of molding things together... once you are forced to dismount that part for some reason, you're going shoot yourself! the car is jacked at the moment (due to engine rebuild), so i think i'm able to figure out if it looks nice or not in spring, when it's on the road again... :) |
Back up. My lights should be here soon and felt like reading this post all over.

What color paint did you use when you painted your car.

Every time I saw them sitting there I remarked to myself about how good the looked *just* like that. I had taken them apart initially to do something like Niteshade, but I needed to see the composition of *all* the parts--inside and out before I knew what my "creative limitations" would be. Next time around I think I'll try something else. Hopefully as unique (if not moreso) that these. ;)

How to polish stock taillights: (trade secrets here ;)) Buy some Maguiers plastic polish... Squirt several "lines" of the polish across the face of the taillight lens. Start at one end and begin rubbing and spreading the polish all over the face of the plastic using a small peice of tee-shirt. Push firmly and evenly and go one section at a time--adding polish and turning the small square of cloth if necessary. It's best to keep the surface fairly "wet" with polish as you rub. Use an "open hand" to spread the force of your fingers evenly across the surface. Be careful that you don't rub hard in one spot when you're going over the black 'housing' of the taillight--it will eat through to the clear surface underneath. When you're done polishing after about 5 minutes, use a clean, soft section of terry-cloth towel and begin buffing and wiping the polish off. Do a section at a time, but this won't take too long. When you're done, do a quick wipe-down of the entire taillight surface, and wa-la! Instant factory shine. If you have BAD surface scratches, you can wetsand using ANY grit above P600 to start with--working your way up to 2000 grit. Work under a sink-faucet or shower-head to insure maximum water coverage while you are sanding. There's nothing to be intimidated about while sanding a clear lense. If you get paranoid at how cloudy the lens is getting after sanding--just dribble some water on the surface and understand that, that's what it's going to look like after they're finished. :) When you're done, use the Maguiers polish like I mentioned--and you're good to go. |
thanks for doin my tails erik, i never posted anything but, to support your thread. +1 for the tails.

looks real solid great work :lol2:

ive heard nothing but good things about ericsevens taillight modding, hey eric, when i get the cash together im going to send you my tail lights and run s4's in the mean time. ive always wanted to know if anyone has figured out a way to make the lights look like the knightsport 7 (or the g35 lights). i personally love that look, but i guess to each his own right?
peace |
what kind of sealant are you guys using??? Should I just get some black silicone??
|
My tailights were falling apart so I took them out and while they were getting repaired I decided to remove the diffuser. I haven't put them together yet. Trying to figure out which will be the best way to tint the tails. I was thinking of tinting the inside of the lenses so it's darker while the outside remains red and orange ( I'm trying to make My FC slightly different while avoiding unnecessary "talks" with the police crying about DOT standards and regulations.)
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1187209177 |
has anyone removed the diffusor from the reverse light area?
|
no. I seemed like it would take some cutting to keep the rubber surround intact. I thought about it but seemed more trouble than it was worth.
|
so black silicone will reseal these? I am doing it today
|
wow, 10 pages about tail lights.
for "tinting" the lights, go to lamin-x.com, they have what you need. http://lamin-x.com/v2_images/prod-color-smoke.jpg |
|
Someone should try making a new diffuser out of styrene or something. I think something that diffuses the light but doesn't have all the bumps would look pretty cool.

Every one of my Rx7's since the original white TII has gotten my taillight mod. :) Love it... I've got three more TII's that have yet to make an appearance... All will be mod'd of course. :bigthumb:

hey there, couple of questions to those of you who have done this already. ive got a pair of S4s in the oven bakeing right now (ill mess those up first, so i dont mess up my S5s hopefully.
1. whoever baked them, did you shut the oven door? mine wont fit in the oven all the way, so im letting them bake with the door open. 2. what kind of sealant did you guys use? specifically, erikseven, since you seem to do these all the time. just wanting to know what i need to get. thanks a bunch for the awnsers! |
well, i found that the S4 taillights have the diffuser molded into the lenses, so you cant take them out, and you cant really mod anything. but anyway, i got my S5s put in the oven, and taken apart, went kinda smoothly. so i found that you can put the tails in the oven, with the door open, right at or below 250 degress, for like 6 minutes, maybe a little more if they need it.
but, still dont know what type of sealer i should be buying/looking for. |

Here's my cheap-o tinted tails. I think the person who owned it before me used that spraypaint tint crap. All the lenses on the car are tinted with it, even the flash-to-pass lenses, if i had them in, were tinted with it, kind of crappy looking, but i guess it looks kind of neat. My dad calls it KITT :icon_no2: |
i had a set from eriksseven. i loved them till they were smashed my a truck lol
|
Dopeness.
|
..
wow those look pretty good
|
yeh but its now never unique cause everyone will want to have them looking the same, personaly i like them stock. they look cheap to me with the mod.
|
going to try this mod this afternoon, what sealer do i use, ive read all posts and no one has said anything about specifacally what sealer i should be using, does it matter? or just any old silicone.
|
well, anything that provides a waterproof seal, because that is what your looking to accomplish.
When I did my tail's I just used a heat gun and for sealer just re-used the old sealer that was on there already, i just made sure to reheat it with the heat gun. |
