S4 TII Stalled While Driving, Wouldn't Start Afterward
So this story has a happy ending, but I had a scary moment this morning while driving my TII. A couple of years ago I put an intake, downpipe, cat delete, and HKS silent high power exhaust on, as well as did an emissions delete. It has ran ok since then, but since I didn't tune it at all, the AFR's have kinda been all over the place. So I bought a SAFCII cheap from a friend and made an appointment at a local shop in 2 weeks for a quick dyno tune.
But lately it's been running crappy. AFR's all over the place, it'll boost and then bog, and my rotary sounds like a Subaru. It was driving me nuts. I knew that I had never replaced my plug wires, so I orded some Magnacore 10mm wires from Rotary Performance. I had been running stock NGK wires, but they were at least 5+ years old. I installed the Magnacores this morning and went for a test drive. All of a sudden it boosted right, didn't bog at all, and the AFR's were much more stable. It looks like my boxer sound and crappy performance were due to poor spark. But when I was about 2 miles from my house, I revved to 5k (9lb boost) and then a loud 'Ting' happened. All of a sudden it had no power. I floored it, no response, then it had a little power, then none. repeat. I was only 5 blocks from home so I blew a stop sign and tried to make it. Then 3 blocks from home, it died. When I tried to start it, it fired right up and died every time. I did a quick look over the engine and no fluids, nothing out of the ordinary, so I called a tow truck and had him bring me the 3 blocks home.
$75 bucks later and a little calmer, I figured it may be time for a rebuild or whatever as my car is getting up there in miles (147k). I looked at the engine one more time, and whatta know. I blew off my rear intercooler hose. I recently removed the intercooler bracket in preperation for a front mount. But I hooked it back up real tight, and she fired right up like normal. So for the Magnacore wires and make sure your clamps are tight. And a quick pic as we never want to see our cars on the back of a flatbed. I knew it was just a matter of time though...
