S4 TII Alternator Question

I'm doing a TII swap and i have 2 connectors that have the same plug as the one for the alternator. But the colors don't match up to the ones in the FSM. If someone knows the colors of the 2 wires on the plug for the back of the alternator let me know asap.

FSM says: black/white & white/black

and i don't even have a white/black in my entire harness, i tore the thing apart to try and find it. one of my plugs is black/white & green/black
I THINK, its been a couple hours since i looked at it last.

So if anyone could just run out to there car and look and then post it on here you'd be doing me a huge favor. Thanks in advance

Those colors are right. Black/White and White/Black.

IF you are putting a turboii harness in the engine bay (it's called the EMISSIONS HARNESS), then the turbo harness does not have the alternator plug on the emissions harness. It's on the Engine harness on a turbo car.

IF your putting a turbo emissions harness in a non turbo, you NEED to make changes to the new trubo harness so THINGS will work. Like the water temp gauge.

Dont forget that when they run out of stock on the line they will sometimes substitute other colors so any given harness can have incorrect colors. The FSM diagram is pretty accurate with where the wires split off so you can use that to confirm wires in the case of wrong colors.

Attached are two jpgs of the plugs that have the reference designator X-15 and X-16.

The wires that are peculiar to the Turbo model have the ( ) around the wire colors.

As you can see, the Turbo emissions harness has different colored wires going where the non turbo has WB and BW wires. They are not just different colors, they also have a different function in life. You NEED to make wiring corrections IF as I'm assuming your putting a USA turbo emissions harness in a Non turbo USA car.

so the emissions harness is the one that plugs into the injectors? and the engine harness is the one that connects to the battery, fuse block, CAS, and single terminal on the alternator?

Ignore the half of each plug with the (F) next to it. Concentrate on the halves with the (EM).

Remove from the X-15 the wire (BrR)and cap it off and tie it back.

Remove from the X-15 the wire (BrB), cap it off and tie it back.

Run two new wires from the alt to where the (BrB) and the (BrR) wires were so the alt will work again.

From the X-16 plug, remove the wire in the end (LgB) and cap it off and tie it to the harness.

From the X-15 plug, remove the wire (YW) and move it to the X-16 plug where the (LgB) was. That will make the water temp gauge work again.

From the X-16 (EM) plug remove the (W) wire and cap off and tie back. That is for the Split Air Solenoid. IF your removing the ACV, then forget about this wire forever.

FYI; The (Lg) wire goes to the knock sensor. Talking X-16 (EM) plug half.

FYI: The (LgB) wire removed from the X-16 (EM) plug was for a pwr steering switch signal. Forget about it forever. No one has pwr steering.

FYI: The (GB) wire in the X-15 can be forgotten. It will mate with nothing. I've forgotten what that (GB) wire does in life. Ferget it.

And about the X-16 (EM) half of the plug. Extract and cap the BR wire )tie it back on the harness), or else every time you start the engine you'll put 12vdc on pin 3B of the Turbo ECU and you really should not do that since it's a different function on the Turbo Vs non turbo.

I figured the (GB) wire in the X-15 (EM) plug out. Remove it from the X-16 plug and put it in the X-16 (EM) plug on the end where there is already a (W) wire. Cap the W wire off and tie it back on the harness. Insert the (GB) wire there. FYI....the GB is for the auxillary fan temp switch on the thermostat housing. If you've no aux fan, forget about this.

That should have dealt with all the wires. Done.

X-15 and 16 are part of the emissions harness. They are on the inside of the car. They are two large dark yellow plugs with the number of sockets shown in each jpg. They are on the passengers side, up, and to the right.

I *** u me d, that your putting a USA turbo harness in a USA car . If not, then forget everything I wrote so far. I also assumed you already put the turbo harness in the car and would realize which two large plugs I was referring to. They are not the ones on the ECU itself.

THey interface with the Front harness. You do nothing to the Front harness side of the plugs, just the EM part of the harness.

There's a old, old saying. When you assume something you make an *** out of you and me or put another way, *** u me d.

That atmospheric pressue sensor is the same on the n/a as the turbo. Leave it alone and plugged in. The boost/pressure sensor in the engine bay NEEDS to be replaced with a Turbo one. Really.

I don't know how to answer that.

The alt has a two wire plug on the back of it.

One wire is black/white and is fed 12v from the Meter fuse if the key is ON.

The other wire is white/black and goes to a relay in the CPU. Inside the CPU it goes to the ground side of a relay. IF the alt is not producing power, the alt puts a ground on that white/black wire and causes the relay to pull in and in turn cause ALL the idiot lights on the Warning Module to come on.

On a non turbo car those two wires are routed thru the plug called X-15. You'll see the BW and WB one above the other in the jpg I attached earlier.

On a turbo EM harness, those two wires do NOT pass thru that X-15 plug. They are a part of the real Engine harness and route to the CPU and the Meter fuse as they do in a non turbo.

If you wanted you could route one wire to a switched 12vdc and the other thru the firewall to the CPU where you'll find a white/black wire in the CPU plug. You could then splice that new wire to the existing white/black wire at the CPU PLUG.

I'll attach a turbo and non turbo wiring diagram later.

Two jpg. One schematic of non turbo and one turbo. I labled one and forgot to label the other. There is a third jpg showing what wire goes where in the alt plug.
