S4 T2 tranny/shifter question

I have an S4 TII tranny in my 85 gsl-se and I believe it also has a short shift kit installed. I got the engine tranny combo from a jdm importer.. MY question is this, when I move the shifter from the central neutral point, over to the left to engage 1st or 2nd gear it seems like there is no spring type tension to keep the shifter at the central point (3-4th), but there is tension when I move the shifter to the right for 5th and reverse..Is this normal for this tranny or is something wrong?? If it is not normal, any ideas on what it could be??When the car was drivable it seemed to shift fine for the few minutes I got to drive it..Thanks for any advice, it is appriciated..
