S4 T2 Side Mirror Disassembly

I recently purchased a set of T2 mirrors, described by the seller as "undamaged".

Apparently to the seller "undamaged" means ripples in the foil layer of the mirror, restricted motor movement, overspray from a bad paint job, a chipped corner on the passenger mirror housing, etc.

Trying to disassemble the mirrors has led to some issues. This thread shows that there are four screws behind the glass that need to be removed, and I got three of them on the passenger mirror without any issue. On the driver's side I got two, one was stripped already when I got in there.

The troublesome screw is the one on the top left side (top right on the driver's side) - I can't see a screw at all. I've moved the mirror every which way and I just can't find it. The mirror glass is still firmly in the housing and doesn't want to come out so there is definitely a screw in there somewhere. The area depicted in the photos in the linked thread show where the screw should be, but on my mirror it looks like it's behind the motor mechanism. Not sure if this is an S4 vs. S5 thing or there's something I'm missing.

I have tried removing the other three screws on the side that mounts to the car, but it also remains firmly inside the housing.

Breaking the glass is not an option - my S4 NA mirrors have a different shape of glass so I can't swap them and I'd also like to keep them as a backup.

If anyone else has tackled this job I'd appreciate some input. There has to be a screw someplace but I can't find it, let alone get a screwdriver on it.

Thanks, Chris.

the mirror glass actually snaps in after the guts get bolted in. the trouble is that ~30 year old plastic (attached to glass!) may or may not snap out...

i took apart a set of S5 mirrors and screw access is possible, although its tough

I've actually been able to source some replacement mirror glass, so I've placed the order. When it arrives (and presuming it fits) I'm going to try removing the glass to access the screw underneath.

Maybe there's a way to take them apart without breaking the glass, but I'm going to break something else if I keep trying to poke around for that screw.
