tfd, you brought a good point about not being rich, because as you start looking around you are going to see that S5 TII's aren't nearly as available as a S4 TII and that greatly affects the going rate for each car. You'll probably find an '87 TII very easily and will cost any where from $1000-2000 less (if not more) than a S5. This of course translate into more money available to start doing your mods .

oh, price is negotiatable. but yea, I'm not in a huge rush to sell it so thats why I sorta started with such a high price. anyway, thanks. I might even keep it for a daily driver.

Here is my 2 cents on this. Difference between S4 and S
1: Engines are different not just in the way of turbots and Rotors but also the engine block it’s self on S5 is more reinforced then S4 and. So if you have really high boost on S4 the walls of housing will slowly pop out with time and on S5 you will probably blow something else before they will do that.. Also I think they changed how water flows through the engine which should help cooling. I would pick the s5 engine
2. The final drive ratio is different. I have both S4 and S5 on S4 and 2nd gear on S4 goes to 55 mph and on S5 it is like 63-65. I don’t know which I would chose here.
3. LSD is definitely different you can read the difference here http://www.rx7.com/cgi-local/2catalog.cgi?cat=2&part=7. I would go with S4 deferential
4. Suspension is deferent I would go with S4 suspension. S5 supposedly has self-adjusting or something, which will change the stiffness depending on the way, you are driving. For example the rear shock will get really stiff if you accelerate really hard so your front will not go up as it will on S4 (this example is out of owners manual of S5). I don’t like this.
5. S5 has ABS and front brakes are 4 piston and rear 1 piston. On S4 no ABS and both rear and front are 4 pistons. I think S4 brakes are better.( this is what I have seen on my cars if S5 turbo should have 4 pistons on rear tell me)
6. S5 has power steering, which I hate, and S4 does not.
7. S5 has Different cold assist start then S4. I don’t know which one is better.
7. S5 has auto seatbelts and S4 does not (Canadian S5 version supposedly has S4 seatbelts).
8. Stereo (if you care) is different in the way of looks and also S5 came with CD players sometimes.
9.S5 come with security system and S4 I think don’t but don’t quote me on that.
10. S5 heavier then S4

1. My S4 came with both power steering and a security system.

2. Your main problem in going to be finding an S5 TII in Canada. Very few come up for sale. When they do, they are quite expensive, and often overpriced for their condition. They usually have asking prices between 7k-11k.

Its a lot easier to find an S4, at least here in Ontario. Even then, there are not that many to choose from.

Stock for stock, I'd take the S5. If you are planning on modding the car, go S4. The money you save will go towards mods (especially with Canadian availibility and pricing).

Funny how so many people think that the 91 TII is the ultimate car, when the few that where many were put together with mazda leftovers.

I see I see, Thanks both of you for the input.

Yea, I will be modding, but I posted before, I won't be doing anything too heavy. So I don't think S5 and S4 motor will really matter much I guess.

The price of S5's are high I know. I keep hearing the S4 engine is better to mod...but, is this really the case if I just do like minor mods? Does this apply to minor mods all the way up to huge/expensive mods, or just huge expensive/long term mods. I guess thats my last question.
thanks.

Well, if you're only going to do minor mods, like intake, exhaust, suspension...then go with the S5. In stock, or near stock form, it definitely has some advantages.

If you plan on doing major mods like engine and turbo, then go S4, since most of the stock advantages won't matter then.

To me, you sound like an S5 sort of guy and the moment.

You say you only plan on some modding, and that you want around 270hp and that's fine. But like most turbo guys once you get there, you'll want more and more and more, lol....

Its not the final drive, its fifth gear. The S5 cars all got the 88 'verts tranny.
4. Suspension is deferent I would go with S4 suspension. S5 supposedly has self-adjusting or something, which will change the stiffness depending on the way, you are driving. That auto stiffing as you call it is on all AAS cars and only applies to them
5. S5 has ABS and front brakes are 4 piston and rear 1 piston. On S4 no ABS and both rear and front are 4 pistons. I think S4 brakes are better.( this is what I have seen on my cars if S5 turbo should have 4 pistons on rear tell me)
The S4 and S5 brakes are the same. There is no such thing as a FC with factory 4 piston brakes on the rear, and ABS was available as an option since 87 on the GXL and T2.
6. S5 has power steering, which I hate, and S4 does not.
Very very few S4 cars came without power steering. Only a few base models and about half the 87 model year run of the T2. Perhaps you are confusing the superior vehicle speed sensing steering that the s4 cars had and the S5 'vert and T2 had with no power steering, since there is no power assit at speeds above 40 MPH and only minimal assit at speeds above 10 MPH

7. S5 has Different cold assist start then S4. I don’t know which one is better.
All cold start systems were supposed to be removed by the dealers because of emisson issues.

8. Stereo (if you care) is different in the way of looks and also S5 came with CD players sometimes.
It was an option on all FCs since they came out in late '85.

9.S5 come with security system and S4 I think don’t but don’t quote me on that.
factory Security systems were available as an option from 87 on...

You need to compare all features not just the features your small sampling of ownership has.
