S-AFC II, this thing is not intuitive
Hi all
I have Just installed the AFC II from A'PEX and my car hasen't gone over 50mph ever since. I have been hitting the archives and found some of the problems but still the car is doging.
My car
s4 88 N/A Vert.
Just did tune up
Engine Mods
About 8,000 on rebuild with street port
Borla exhoust, hiflow cat
Cone intake with cold air box
Crane Cams Hi-6 ignition
S-AFC (soon hope to be working)
So as to not waste your time I have checked all conections and wiring diagram and all are good. Sensor type, Flap --5in 5out--- 2 roters x 2=4 and arrow up-- throtle sensor voltage @ 1---low 85% hi 99% ---Air correction (I coppied 88Integrals 7-18-04 post)
hi-thrtl 1000 -3. 2000 -4, 3000 -6, 4000 -3, 5000+4, 6000+6, 7000+8, 8000+10
lo-thrtl 1000 0, 2000 0, 3000 0, 4000 0, 5000 +4, 6000+6, 7000+8, 8000+10
Now I have no idea how to set the low-thrtl so I kinda mimicked hi (this is prabibly wrong)Now I have no throttle response and it is moderately poping out the tail (not like a normal 7 pop) so it is rich. Thank god I dident go the other way and pinged (new motor blues)
So that is my story. My 7 sits in the garage and I am pleading for support. These things are not intuitive and I am no tuner; all I want to do is get to one.
Thanks in advance

What size injectors are you running? Also, even though you probably checked, make sure that nothing(not just AFC) is up plugged, or lose(especially the ignition box).

I'm not surprised it's running like ****. Those must be the worst settings I've ever seen. All FC's run very rich full-load mixtures stock, and you're adding fuel to make it richer! That's why it's popping and farting. In the high-throttle range you've got a big dip between 2000 and 4000rpm and then a huge jump up at 5000rpm, and the low-throttle range is flat until the same huge jump at 5000rpm. The correction curve should be much smoother and heading in the opposite direction.
No offense, but it looks like you're in over your head with this tuning business. I highly recommend you get the car onto a dyno and let a pro tune it properly using the right tools. In the mean time either zero all the settings or turn if off. All you're doing is wasting fuel and going slower.

Yes you guys got it. I have done all the work on my 7 by my self and the learning curve has been steep. It is through the help of these forums that my education has solely durived. I am definatly over my head with programing this thing their not intuitive. With peoples posts the education begins and I soon will understand the HOWS and WHYS isent that what these forums are about? Their is no question I am going to take it to a turner and have it properly dinoed. I want my caar to run right. The thing is I got to get it there. I have zeroed the thing out and it is still running like ****. IS the TPS that much of a hinderance in the s4? I will recheck the wireing (Which I already have done twice) but I followed the instructions from 1300cc.com and the book that came with it to a "T". Does any one have a website that has a how too on moving the TPS relays to the presue sensor? "Rember I am N/A"
Oh and about those settings I got them from a search of this site prior to waisting anyones time. See "Here are my s4 SAFC settings" posted by 88IntegraLS back on 7-18-04.
Thanks for all and any help

Do this: warm up the engine. Actually drive it for about a mile after warming it up. Now while idling, look in the ETC mode at the SENSOR CHECK. In the Sensor Check you need to write down the voltages for the afm1 and the throttle sensor. Then post them. I briefly had a safc on my 86na and used the tps. It worked. Settings? Got me. There was a lot of minus's in there, especially around five grand where I saw a pig rich period, give or take a couple of hundred. I had a wideband on that car and was using that to determine what needed to be done with the safc. Sorry, but the safc and wideband got moved to my other turboii and ain't no way I'm gonna move them back and forth for this post.
Frankly I don't see a problem using the series four tps. Set the high to where the tps is at full tps opening and low below that figure.
The voltage figures asked for might give us a clue about how your car is misbehaving.

1 in and 1 out not 5 in and 5 out although this will probably not solve your problem as i think it lies else where. you can determan if it is the safc or your car by removing it from the picture. simply unplug the connectors that split your sensor wire and plug the sensor back to the ecu

Ok It is 11pm and I finally got some time to play. The AFM1 # is 3.850 The TS# 1.010. I drove the car and got it nice and hot, infact the header was glowing = think its running rich? LOL I zeroed out the SAFC and re set the paramiters (4---ARROW UP......) You get the piont. I have also rechecked the wiring (for the fifth time) and it is good according to 1300cc.com how to wiring diagram. I ran it with 5in 5out and 1 in and 1 out with it running marginally worse at 1 in 1out. Every thing I have read ses 5in 5out. It wont bairly holds an idle and as I mentioned runs rich with No hi/low compensation.
Thanks for you help I will be unable to respond till after 11pm tomarrow 10-6-04

how would our car run without an oxygen sensor? exceedingly rich with a bad idle? I'm guessing it's a connection after or before the safc. you should do some searches involving the sypmtoms not what you think might be the cause. just my 2 cents.

Locketine the O2 sensor is new as Ireplaced it thinking it was the initial cause of my car running rich prior to the safc install. Good thought though The car ran strond befor the install (a bit rich but stong)
Nzconvertable-- do I reconect the TPS (JUST MAKING SURE) and wire the yellow wire to the ecu and the white to the MAP side?
Thanks

I have the S-afc and its awsome. You might just need some tuning. Im in So. Cal. If you still need help PM me. It will eventually need to be tuned on the dyno though. It's the only way to get exact readings.

I haven't read the S-AFCII instructions, but if it's wired similar to the S-AFC, the only wire that gets cut is the AFM wire. All of the other connections are made by tapping into the wire.
If you've been cutting other wires I'm surprised it runs at all...
