It's not a simple bolt-in affair, but it can be done.

OK, sorry, I forgot do some search! I thought that the rx8 gearbox is a shorter gearbox, a racing box, but I was wrong!

Rx-8 transmissions are glass, at least until the 2009 models

they can't even hold up to the stock power levels of the 8... they would only be considered a racing transmission if you like to shift constantly.

Why would you want to change the tranny? the FC tranny is bulletproof

The turbo transmissions are bulletproof. The NA transmissions are garbage. Weak gears, weak syncros, and most are pretty much mush after 20-25 years.

6 speeds are gangster. Seriously. Whenever I go from driving my 6 speed 350z for a period of time and then switch to the FC it is the MOST glaring difference between the two.

Performance and drivability is better. The close ratio 6 speed keeps you in whatever RPM range you are trying to drive in at the moment much better than a 5 speed. You have to drive one to truely understand. It's feel, more than numbers.

I would love to put a 6 speed in my FC. I don't think there are any options for a TII though as the RX-8 and Miata transmissions would fail faster than I could install them.

Has anyone on the forum installed a 6speed on a FC? NOT counting the V8 swapped FC's with the Vette 6speed (still gangster).

Steve

did you read the FAQ on the 6speed install?

and FYI, i used to own a car with a 6sp. while being a blast to drive, i found that last gear to be less than useless... a 5sp would just been fine.

yes. the problem with the rx8 trans is that in the FC the shifter is in the radio, so you need to find a shifter assembly from one of the other cars that use that trans, and it works.

i have not done it myself.

a Mazdaspeed miata uses the same 6 speed trans with a different bellhousing and tailshaft housing

the miata trans tailshaft with place the shifter further back (closer to the actual shifter hole)

But how much im not totally sure But id buy the miata trans and get the rx8 bellhousing So you dont have to change the internals just modify the input shaft abit

Tell me about it. I will be putting in my fourth TII trans at some point because the syncros keep going.

The number of gears is irrelevant, the gear ratios are what matter. The 6sp in my Subaru isn't that much greater then my RX7, except for on the highway when I am just cruising. Even then its all about the gear ratios in the box, not the the fact that one is in 6th and one is in 5th.

its better and easier to swap out a miata trans rather than the rx8

I think that Aaron Cake's Tina proves this is not true.

i have had the miata and rx8 next to each other and the rx8 trans guts are WAY beefier.

but that being said i didn't look at how swappable the case stuff is, and it is at some point because there IS a shifter combo between the rx8 and miata that works
