Rx7 Transmission Difference

Can Anyone tell what the compatiblity is for the diffrent generation rx7 transmissions are. I am wondering if a tranny from a 1985 gsl-se will fit onto a 1989 vert. Also, if you you could let me know as to which year transmission will work on the 89 and if there are any special kits I would need to buy... Thanks!

The 85s have the stick swift located much closer to the bell housing, so it would not be a direct swap unless you modify the trans or the chassis.

Is your vert convertible or stick? There are actually chassis differences between autos and manuals. Mostly where at the trans mount on the chassis.

what are you plans?

Hey thanks for the info. I am actually comtemplating replacing my current transmission with one which has fewer miles on it, currently i have 170k on the original.. The only problem so far seems to be the throw out bearing and a slight leak.. Id like to just go ahead and replace it... Its a manual tranny... Any extra info you could give would def. be appreciated....Thanks,
John

Myron, there is ABSOLUTELY no point in changing the tranny.

First off: The throwout bearing is not part of the tranny, and it is very cheap and easy to change. The leak is most likely a very small thing that can be very easily fixed. The cost and work to get a GSL-SE tranny in is more than the work and cost to do it right.
