Rx7 dies randomly while driving.
So I was heading up 64 east and was cruising at about 85mph. Then all of the sudden the car bucks sputter'd a bit then kept going fine. Then a few miles later the car bucked again then lost all power I tried giving it gas but it did nothing the motor was only running because it was moving in gear.. so I call a tow company and have it towed to my mechanic. Well it sits overnight they go to work on it the next morning and it starts right up. They take it for an extensive test drive and it shows no signs of any problems. So i pick it up and drive it for 3 weeks.
Then im driving on some local back roads taking it easy cruising at 30mph and the car bucks and dies. I let it sit overnight and try to start it and no luck.. I already replaced the fuel pump before all of this happened. I also had the fuel tank replaced cause it was leaking.. so what should I do?
Is the car somehow flooding while driving?
its an 87 S4 NA streetport. airpump and emissions removed.

Car needs three things to run, Air/fuel mixture, Ignition, and Compression. Your compression seems fine. leaves 2 possibilities.
Easiest test would be to see if you can get the car to die and sputter while sitting still. When it sputters see if you can spray some fuel down the intake, (starting fluid works ok just dont use too much!) If the car starts to run fine after you spray fuel then you have a fuel problem (Check fuel pressure, Fuel Volume). You can have volume with out pressure, and pressure with out volume. Pretty much Fuel pressure doesn't mean there is fuel. Also when you take the fuel volume test put the fuel in a plastic bottle or a container where you can inspect the fuel, check for water, or debri.
Only say this because couple days ego I had a customer come in with a car that was dieing. We put another mechanic he changed spark plugs, plug wires, Spark plug coils. He was about to rip off the front of the motor and inspect the timing belt. My boss then had me look at this, and I started with the Tests I mentioned above (Easiest way) and I found it was a fuel problem. Ended up the Gas cap was left off, and we had just had a storm. The fuel tank was full of water. Replaced the filter, removed the fuel, and the car ran perfect.
If the fuel does not effect anything than you most likely have an Ignition problem which opens a new can of worms. Also the other side of the Air fuel mixture is the AIR, check for air restrictions.
This is the proper way to diagnose the issue, and not just throw a part at it.

Okay, so I'm having a similar problem. I have an 86 FC that does fine while cruising at the same rate of acceleration. However, it dies when there is increased pressure on the throttle, and it also dies out when making left turns. They aren't even necessarily sharp turns, either, just left turns. So, while in several intersections, as I accelerate from coming from a stop, my 7 has a complete loss of power. It's still running, but the gas pedal could be to the floor and there would be no difference or gain of power. I turn my hazards on and continue to pump and pump until it comes back to life (after about 5 pumps and I've already **** myself out of fear of being rear ended). This is something new, it hasn't done this before and I've had my 7 for two months.
A friend of mine had an idea that it was cooling/emissions related.
I think it might have something to do with the
-fuel pump
-injectors
-possibly the maf, the guy before me put a shitty k&n filter that I have yet to replace
I know I need to clean out the gas tank, should check my fuses and grounds. The idea of it being the ECU having bad grounds (as mentioned in above posts) is a new idea to me.
I don't know what else it could be.
Also, my car runs really really rick, I failed emissions HORRIBLY. The numbers were in the 2000s when it should have been in the 200s.

My rx7 died one day when I was driving to work. I got to the redline in first and it lost all power and stopped. lol turns out my intake fell off the turbo and looked like it exploded into shards. Gave me an excuse to go buy a more suitible (SHINY) replacment though

You disconnect the hose after the fuel filter and put a T coupler fitting in its place where one end of the hose goes to the filter, the second end of the hose goes to the engine and the third end of the T fitting goes to a pressure gauge. Start the car and you will get the fuel pressure upon startup and also at idle.

K, I had this EXACT same problem, I replaced damn near EVERYTHING but the wiring harness. This was back on my TII motor, all grounds clean, everything was in working order.
Whel, when I took that motor out, and replaced it with a worked-over N/A, and switched it to carburation with a DLDFIS system powered by a CC fireball box using an 85 cover/distributor, and a gutted FC leading coil for firing. Replaced fuel pump with a Holley Blue.
Now, I STILL HAD this SAME stalling out randomly problem, whel I went on trying to purposely break down and recreate it, so I did something random, I threw a light on the circuit with the coils, which is also the circuit with the green 6-pin open connector by the leading coil (I think, someone confirm please). I knew before this motor went in that it was ignition cut. Whel I happend to have pulled my trigger wires from these coil wires to turn my box on.
What happend was the power is randomly being cut to that circuit, I have no IDEA why, but it does restore overnight, I would imagine heat or some sort of something to be the cause, but I have not pinpointed it yet, since I don't use anything from that circuit, I just rewired with the spare fuse in the underhood fuse box :P
But I can almost guarantee it is an ignition cut problem. Look on the circuit with that green connector and your coils, look for flaws, problems, fuses, anything. Its not much of a help but it is a start.

I now own this car, purchased it with this issue...i properly rewired his "fuel cut off switch" and replaced the fuel pump which was dead when i got it home. runs perfect since then. starts up everytime, no cut outs or anything.
the only problem i have been having is getting the damn thing to pass inspection since all of the emissions crap was removed...
