These things will end up being junked due to the inefficient design...
I've just read that the U.S. federal government is looking to up CAFE minimums - CAFE controls how fuel efficient cars need to be in the U.S.  An increase over the next 5 years would peg at 37mpg in 2014!  You think the rotary engine can be that fuel efficient???
Scrappage laws abound in the lawmakers eyes.  There was a bill that got scrapped that would require mandatory scrappage of vehicles 15 years or older, but it got resurrected within another bill - damn laymakers...

Compared to multi-valve OHC pistons engines - not even close.  4-cylinder, 16-valve, SOHC and DOHC piston engines easily make over 20-25mpg even pounded around town!  These engines break 40mpg on freeway driving.  A rotary engine cannot even come close to these numbers; I doubt the new MSP-RE in the RX-8 can even come close...

I think the rotary engine, even with the MSP-RE, will barely able to hit 20-25mpg.  This means all the other cars gotta be able to hit 40+mpg???  I find this hard to believe from a lowly 4th tier Japan automaker...

The Renesis engine is the most fuel efficient rotary yet. Mazda *is* aware of US fuel laws. Why? Two reasons: They have Ford on their rotary department now everywhere they turn (The RX-1 never reached production, and the RX-7 doesn't distribute in the US cuz of Ford), and they are made in JAPAN, the original home of fuel economy!
Furthermore, Mazda designed a hydrogen cell engine. It's a rotary engine. And this was done in 1991...

They'll find a way
Mazda engineers have brought the rotary engine this far, and the sky is the limit. A new crew of 47 rotary warriors will take the torch and bring the rotary along it's evolutionary path. Fuel efficency can be achieved with the rotary engine, it will and can be done.
Just you wait and see,

I'd wager that the price won't change much. The RX-7 enthusiasts are likely to stay right where they are... Sure the RX-8 may have a newer, more "efficient" rotary, but with the value difference between a new car and one that has been out of production (in the US anyway) since '95...I doubt the 8 will have too much of an impact on the 7.

The fuel efficiency of the RX-8 is supposed to be significantly better than the RX-7. Plus, 250 hp for natural aspiration in a rotary engine that is smaller than a 13B? Sounds like progress to me!

Because of the new trend in car designs, the 1st and 2nd gen will fade out, much like the RX-2 and 4 did. Also, because of the RX-8, ricers like to get their grubby little hands on newer machines. American manufacturer's will discontinue making parts for the 7, and we will have to go dircetly to Japan for parts. We, gentlemen, are the last of a dying breed. Enjoy it while ya can, cuz in 5 years, the 2nd gen will be a memory. WHich is good, cuz they will be even more of a sleeper!!!!! MUHWAHWAHWAHAHAHAHA!!

well i know all the RX-7's ive ran with a full exhaust i get 29-33mpg on the highway with and in town i average 20-24mpg, i dont see that as bad at all, the restrictive stock exhaust is what kills our fuel mileage.
mind you im getting this type of fuel mileage with my 5.12 gears i got a little better in the black FC i had with stock gearing

I have a new exhaust system from the manifold back. I have a downpipe, presilencer, and high flow cat that flows to a custom cat-back to single muffler. All the way through the diameter is 2.5 inches. But, I still get 12-15mpg. Is the manifold really screwing me that much or possibly my O2 sensor? Where is the O2 sensor by the way?
Thanks,
Ike

The more horspower comes from the higher redline.  All the other 13B's can do that if you wanna run above 9kRPM.

Mazda *is* aware of US fuel laws and counter point....
Do you really think Ford/Mazda would go through all the start up expense to market a $30,000 +/- car that will be labled a Gas Guzzler from day one? I don't think so.
And as a counter point to all you nay sayers
To make the RX8 marketable, Ford/Mazda is going to have to put on a serious ad campaign to sell the mass public on the virtues of a Wankle. I put out a post with this thought earlier this week (is that what sprung this poll? )
Anyway, if Mazda/Ford is successful in raising this awareness, then the resale value of all our Rex's will benefit. What I've saw at the LA Auto Show, Mazda seems to be building their ad campaign on a historical evolution of Wankle cars starting with the Cosmo. You can bet the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen will get exposure. And, how often does a 16-22, 15-10, or 9-7 year old car get fresh face on TV in any manner.
AND, no Convertable RX8's (at least not yet). So, if you get sold on a Wankle and you want to get your hair dirty driving a Wankle car, I'm betting a good clean 2nd Gen Vert at least will see a bit of appreciation. At least if/until the "Cosmo 21" mentioned in Aprils R&T gets a go as a pop top. And, with apologies to RX7 faithful, I'm still drooling at that prospect.

I must be smoking your exhaust fumes!
Sure, you can get up to 300 HP out of a good PP, but that's going a bit peaky, wont pass emissions or idle well, and gets poor gas milage. I've never heard of getting 250 HP out of a 13B NA without porting, regardless of redline. The Rx-8 has a full race intake port with a side exhaust port, which means no port timing overlap, hence the good idle, broad power band, and "improved" gas milage. That's progress, isn't it?

is it just me or you guys forgot about this
remeber wankle was used as a hydrogen once????
that should clear up some of the concerns about air pollution nad if ford has the nice brain to think about it make it hydrogen again and play with it to get better miles per hyrogen hehe what other engine you know that can use it???
so this is the window of oprtunity

I guess you haven't seen the FSAE papers on the MSP-RE.  It barely does 30mpg.  That's not good enough if those proposed CAFE standards are passed.  CAFE is pushing for close to 40mpg - that's a huge jump.  What is Mazda going to do?  Lighten the chassis more?
