RX-7 Turbo II?

Ok, I am in need of a new Car and for some reason I really wanna get a RX-7 of some sort.

Well ive been looking in some ads and found a 87 RX-7 with the Turbo. Havent Test Drove it, but am curious if im just heading into trouble. Cause im not very skilled with fixing cars yet. Next September i will be taking a Advanced Auto Shop class which i would have all the Tools to fix cars. I also have some friends that are fairly skilled with working on cars, but probally no experiance on Rotary Engines.

They told me to not get a Rotary Engine cause they are expensive to fix, very complicated, and not worth it in the end. But i seem to be attached to getting a RX-7 and thought i might get some opinions from peole who have them.

So if you could give me some advice on if this car would be worth it to me, or it would cause me more trouble then pleasure. The RX-7 in question is the 1987 RX-7 with the Trubo, 120k miles. The guy says it runs great but needs a Tune Up, he is selling it for $1200.

I would use my friends knowledge of regular cars, and this RX-7 Buyers Guide when i go check it out in Person and Test Drive it.

I would also try and use Carfax but Parents dont wanna pay for it, and i dont know anybody with a Unlimited account that i could use

Thanks
-Doug

They aren't that complicated and they aren't that expensive (for the average person).

Well, it's true if you are rich enough to fix the rotary engine. Once you've blown the engine, most likely you need to buy another rotary engine or rebuild...

Good luck,

I would say get the car, maintain it properly and you will be glad you got it. they are fun cars to own and drive. Just remember this, treat your car like crap and it will do the same to you. Give it the TLC it deserves, and take the time to learn about the inner workings of the rotary.

More like $1000-2000. Rotary Ressurection. And 3mm apex seals..yeah, let's put in some bigger seals, so we can improperly tune our cars and not have to worry about it!

bigger does not necessarily mean better. 3mm apex seals are not worth it unless you want to spend thousands more to not only buy them, but customize the rotor to fit them as well.

I like to say prepare to be the mechanic and the most of the work on this car by yourself. Its gonna be that way unless you are rich and have a rotary shop nearby. Not many people want to work on rotaries because of the fact it works different than a piston and they are too lazy to learn. If you are down to read a lot and experiment, then get yourself a rx-7 turbo. If you can do the work yourself, then you will be satisfied with the power it puts out. I know I am satisfied. I'm 21 and I've been working on the rotary engines for 3 years since I was 18 and I'm just starting to get confident in my rotary mechanic skills. None of my rx-7 friends with a 5+ years exp couldnt help me get my 90 TII running. I managed to do most of the work by myself. This rx7club website is also very helpful if you ignore the angry people.

Exactly, if you are planning to run it stock, and even if you plan on heavily modding it, i can only think of about 2 reasons to get 3mm apex seals, 1. HEAVY ammounts of boost (facilitated by a larger turbo) or 2. Extreme street port and you plan on dragging.... Otherwise 2mm.

Otherwise, the car is fun, don't buy a ragged out car like I did, or you will be always working on it.

Edit: although i think this engine has been rebuilt, 120k miles on chasis, compression tested it and got 110 on all faces both rotors

That statement proves ignorance and couldn't be farther from the truth.

Carfax reports are only $20 and can be purchased, 1 off, with a credit card.
