rTek 1.7 and JDM motor??

hey guys, i am in need of either a rebuild or a new motor......i think.......(have to fill cooling system up everyday and i cant find a leak...yet......but im thinkin i have a seal on its way out and instead of just replacing it i might as well do everything while its a part) and i am debating weather to rebuild or replace.

the thing is, i can get a JDM motor (and no im not getting t to be JdM tYtE y0) for $850 w/o trans. or i can spend like 1k-1.5k on a rebuild kit........the JDM motor is lookin good to me lol, but would i be able to use my rteked ECU with the JDM motr?? would i have to use all the USDM sensors and harness for it? (essentialy making it $850 for a short block and extra turbo/manifolds)

if i have to just use a short block then can i get a S5 and have it work just as well?? (that way i can upgrade to the S5 turbo so i can do the hybrid and have better flowing wastegat!) edit- i am premixing so im not worried about the OMP..........would i still need to swap the front cover if i were to go to the s5??

thanx for all thoes helping!!!

Yes, other than a few minor emissions items they are exactly the same motor.

Sensors no, harness yes.

Doing a JDM motor swap is pretty straightforward. The major differences are that there's no air pump or EGR valve (if it's an S4). You have to use the USDM wiring harness so you'll have to pull the upper intake manifold off to get to the injectors. Make sure that you route it correctly or else you'll jam up stuff....took me a few tries...

Oh, if you are just going to drop the motor in, I'd suggest taking the manifolds off and replacing the gaskets. It'll save you an assload of $$ in the long run. I didn't do that and when the engne fired up, I found that the exhaust and turbo mani gaskets were completely fried and the LIM->UIM gasket was nonexistant (due to me not realizing it when I ran the wiring...). It cost me 700 bucks just to get the exhaust and turbo gaskets installed. Rip it apart to shortblock and put it back together. Save time and money. Replace vac lines and anything that may look shady.

Good luck man

All FC's have an air pump.

I would do a rebuild if I were you. You actually know what your getting. I got a jdm motor, had no oil in it at all, my o-rings are already on their way out. Have about 20mi.s on it and there's oil in the coolant.

hmmm, yeah im kinda leaning to rebuild, cause then i get to take it apart and actualy do some work over pulling and dropping back in lol but it seems more cost effective for teh $850 JDM motor.......although shipping might just even it out........we'll seee

and thanx for the input guys!!!

dude, I got mine for $1150 13bt/w transmission and shipped to my door. It's well worth rebuilding the engine, I thought I was gonna get a good jdm engine too but now I have the pay the $1200 to rebuild it. It's worth it cause you get to put on a streetport for an extra $100 plus the fuel you need/ electronics will cost extra but it's well worth it. I didn't have a TII core before so thats why I got a jdm one.
