When I was a boy.... baseball bat. These days there are lots of fender-rollers out there and they suggest you use a heat gun to help protect the paint.

body hammers work great as long as you're not beating it to death you can get a nice smooth roll.

Fender roller works great, but for that money you could pay a body shop to do it.....and no matter what you do, if you're making any kind of significant roll on the fender you WILL crack the paint - heat or not. Unless someone re-sprayed your car down the line and went all out and put flex additive in their clear coat...

Use a hammer and dolly, or in place of a dolly, a small block of wood. The wood will be easier on the outer surface of the panel and cause less marring then a dolly.

BUT - if you've never done any metal work before and want this to turn out well............bone up the cash and pay a professional (you'll have to see them for paint anyway). Its easy to slip once and put a nice big outtie dent on your fender or quarter panel.
