rolled apex... what now

alright guys, i've come to the conclusion that ive rolled an apex seal, a rear one to be somewhat exact.

my question is, if i dont want to tear the whole motor down, can i only go as far as taking the rear housing off, as to buy a new one, slip new gaskets on there, and put it back together?
do i need to buy a whole rebuild kit? the motor has about 35k on it... and its a mazda factory rebuild

If your going to the effort, just rebuild the entire engine, it wont cost much more, or be much more difficult.

i'd put new soft seals in it all over, you may be able to get away with just tearing the rear rotor apart.. but... you can never be sure that the front water and compression seals are going to clench right again after you take the pressure off of them...... better to be safe than sorry if you are going to have it out anyway..

My advice is to get the basic kit from RA and freshen the whole thing...

If' you've been running a lot of boost for that 35K miles.. it may be due anyway!!

Once you take the 18 bolts out and the rear Iron off your already there. I mean there is nothing more to do but take off the middle plate and then pull out the E-shaft. Then you'll have access to the both the rotors and housings. If you rolled the apex you'll need a new housing which could cost you. $550 is not to much to spend for a rebuild kit. See the archives, 13B rebuild kit by Karack.

yeah, thats what i saw for the kit from rotary aviation... but if the 500 for the kit and then a new... or decently used housing... could cost me too much, then i dont know. i dont do something till i have the money to do it right, but im a junior in college, and lacking a garage... i guess itll be many months till i can do it (summer)

Read the whole thread, there was something missing from the RA kit that made it more.

Mazdatrix has used rotor housings in the front lobby. They only use new housings for their rebuilds. The used are in really good shape. You have to pick em out. Let me know if you need me to get you some. The only sell these to walk ins.
