Retarding the timing.....

well as the temps have droped here in south texas, I have been getting crazy boost creep...and detonation has been a problem....I didn't have the 4000 rpm range + or - on my afc so I just bumped it up 2 notches 4% and 5600 is at 6% 7200 10%....anyway that helped but I wanna make my engine last I understand how to change the timing but how far should I retard it just to be safe?

Try just a little bit, see if thats enough, I would think 5 degrees retard.
