replacing OEM auto-adjust shocks

Hello,

Looking for advice on replacing OEM auto-adjusting shocks on an 87 GXL. Replacement auto-adjust stock units from MazdaTrix would run around $700 for all four, a bit beyond my budget. And does anyone know if these were originally KYB or Tokico?

Can anyone recommend cheaper non-adjustable shocks that work reasonably well? Rest of the car is stock as a rock. I don't want adjustable shocks, because if I was going to spend that much $$, I'd get the factory ones.

Also, many of the replacement shocks specify that they are NOT for replacing the auto-adjusting shocks. Why not?

Last, some of the replacements I've seen state that (on the fronts) they're a special McPherson strut insert that bolts into the OEM housing after cutting the top and removing old internal parts. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm planning a DIY replacement, since the procedure otherwise seems pretty routine (renting McPherson strut compressors, of course).

All advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

aftermarket adjustable shocks/struts are about $300-$500 for a set of 4 depending on brand (Tokiko or KYB AGXs) and where you buy them from. They are adjusted on the outside manually, so that auto/sport switch won't work.

Non-adjustable are roughly half price...

Lightbulb replacing auto adjust

I have already done this to my 88 gxl, go to www.shocks.com and get the eibach springs, you have to call the number but they got the best prices. 4 eibach springs run you about 200-250 dollars. then get the kyb adjustables that will run you 400 dollars, this is what i have on my car. it wil cost about 635 to get them shipped and everything, then just have them put in. I love the combo it gives a great stiff feel, and you can adjust the bound and rebound. Private messege me if you got any more questions.

You can install whatever shocks you want into your AAS car. But, if it isn't the OEM AAS shock, the AAS won't work, since the AAS shock is a special piece that also has to be connected electrically into the system.

My advice is to just ditch the AAS. If you want adjustibility, then just go with a good aftermarket set. They will offer a wider range of adjustment for autocross/street/strip purposes. A lot of people rave about KYB AGXs and Tokicos are good as well. If you don't want adjustibility, still buy some good aftermarket ones, that re just non adjustable.
