Reinstalled transmission...now only shifts into 5th/Reverse?
Hey guys....just like the title says...finished up my clutch/flywheel job. Got the transmission back in, everything hooked up and ready to go. Went to put the shifter in the car so I could put it in first gear and start it up. It would only shift into 5th and Reverse! Not sure of all the things it could be but I had a couple of ideas. I read in an old thread about a similar problem where Karack suggested someone's check ball might have gotten stuck? I am assuming that is part of the springs and ball bearing stuff that installs into the shifter housing. Also, and I hope it's not this, is maybe the fork itself was not aligned properly upon reinstalling the extension housing? I replaced the return spring in the shifter, so I had to take that stuff apart to replace the spring. Anybody else have any ideas what's happening? I really don't want to take it all back apart, but I will if I have to. Thanks in advance. This is on an '88 TII. I'll list all the parts I replaced during this job. Clutch disk and pressure plate, flywheel/counterweight, throwout bearing, pilot bearing/seal, front and rear tranny seals, shifter return spring, rear main seal, stationary gear o-ring, royal purple in tranny and diff. I think that's everything I did. What do you guys think?

when you reinstalled the extension housing did you watch the shifter arm enter the shift gates? it could be that the shifter arm is not meshed properly and is outside the gates.
if it ****** fine prior to the work then i doubt it is a check ball issue, in the future though it is a good idea to install the shifter to the transmission outside the car and check all the gears before installing the tranny.

when all of them are lined up you should be able to swing the shifter arm right into there, in neutral it will just swing through the lined up gates but if one of the shift arms got pushed down somehow then the shifter won't be able to slide through the gates in neutral since it will be blocked. my only suggestion is to remove the tranny and pull the rear housing back off and inspect what could be jamming it up.
