Redline MT-90 or any redline products unavailable at any parts store?!
Hi guys,
4 months ago, I was able to pick up red line at a near auto parts store - My memory is terrible and I can't remember what that store was - now I go to any of all stores that have different kinds of tranny fluid, etc... for cars, and NONE has redline?
I went to this one place that will do my tranny fluid - and they told me "Noone carries redline anymore, as it's not top of the line, you don't need that for your car, you need Amsoil"
But doesn't anything besides redline not good for our trannies? Or did I misintrupet what people have been saying? I probably did...
Okay, so how do I get redline tranny fluid now, since appearently noone carries them? Doesn't Redline have a website I can order their stuff off of?
Thanks,
Christi
EDIT: I'm not speaking of oil, like 10-40, a few people have IM'd me and told me that - is this post reallyt hat confusing?

I like Royal Purple and Redline. I found some Redline stuff at Pep Boys but there should be a high performance shop near you somewhere even if its a ricer one. They'd know where to find Redline stuff I'm sure. For Royal Purple you can go to their website and they'll tell where their products can be bought.

Ryde -
hey man, thanks. I searched EVERYWHERE Today, and it appeared noone has them instock as fear of being "unpopular".
I've heard of Royal Purple being used for gear oil - but wasn't sure if it was any good or not. The ones who have used it - have you ever used Redline and if so; Which do you perfer? Purple or Redline? Which one gave a better siginificant change?
Hm, I have a stupid question though - what's the site for royal purple to read more up on it.

I've used both Redline and Royal Purple
Both work really well. But Redline stinks to high heaven. If you get any leakage through where the shifter meets the tranny, you'll know it.
On the other hand, Royal Purple odor is not near as intrusive. Odd reason to choose Royal Purple over Redline, but reason it is.

Any GL-4 or GL-5 80W-90 will work fine. You can read the exact specifications at the beginning of the appropriate chapter in the factory service manual. See How-To's/Manuals:
http://fc3s.org/
Red Line will work better, of course, but synthetic oil is not required. The correct Red Line product for the transmission is MT-90, and you will need to buy 3 quarts. Once again, the manual will tell you how much to add, and how to add it (the TII is kinda tricky but the NA is pretty simple).
Also, if you read the service schedule at the beginning of the manual, you will notice that the differential oil should be changed at the same time as the transmission oil. I bet you can't guess where to find out the correct weight and amount of oil to use.

Yes, the oil weights are confusing, especially since the gear oils are rated on a different system than engine oils. No, it's not just you.

Thanks all.
I assume, from summitracing, the one I was looking at was 75W90 - is that okay, or too high?
I've changed it before - and it took extactly 3 quarts, which is good
I never changed the diff, as I didn't know you had too when you changed the gears.....does it use the same stuff? Or is it completely different?

Slight difference
Red line, since you have a S4 , you'll need to ad a Limited Slip additive. Royal Purple, you don't.
If you do a search about Royal Purple, you'll find a thread I started that has loads of info on both Tranny and Diff oil, synthetic or otherwise.

I can always find Redline products in auto parts stores. It just depends on the store. I never see it in stores that are a part of a national chain. I do find it in local places that the V8 guys go to for their go-fast parts. Just look around in your town and go into places you haven't before. Happy hunting.

Use Amsoil. Same stuff as Redline (basically) but cheaper, more easily available and a pretty blue colour. It's what I use, and it is great substitute for a transmission rebuild.
