Redline??

So I have a 91 vert N/A, buzzer for shift/oil/water does not work. I have read through the archives, and need to test to see if it is the buzzer that is bad. Some here say it is a blessing not to have it.

So if the manual says 7900 is redline, and I have read others here run up to 8.5 where is the actual limit of the motor?? On my vert it can get to 6.5-7K fine, then it just dies off and takes forever to hit 7.9 or 8K.

I am going to check the 5th & 6th actuators, but from my research it seems it would be very obvious if they are stuck open or closed. I know that on the freeway, I need to drop to 3rd to get it to ramp up from 50-60MPH to 80, and it really is sluggish getting there. My opinion may be jaded, cause I am used to BB V8's and this is my first 7.
Thanks,
Pete

The redline on manual tranny 89-91 non turbos is 8000 RPM.

There is no reason for a S5 stock non turbo engine to go that high as the intake runs out of breathing around 7.5K, however it should rev freely to that point. The torque curve radically drops as well.

And the stock flywheel is only rated to 9K.

If it is not getting to 8K freely in the lower gears, then you probably have either a stuck or non functioning aux port and/or a stuck/ non functioning VDI system. This is common if the air pump has been removed (some clueless owners mistakenly think removing the air pump will result in increased HP while in the real world, it will disable the aux ports and VDI, killing all mid and upper end power).

It gets to 6.5K fine, really slow getting from there to 7.5. I guess if i waited long enough it would hit 8, but it is really struggling to get there. Even in 1st gear.

I will check the aux port actuator, I suppose I push or pull the linkage to make sure it is not stuck first, then I will need to break out the test leads to check that when current is applied it actually works? The VDI and the 6PI are not in my FSM, I have the 89 FSM and I guess on S5's they switched to electrical activation instead of vacumme? Let me know how to test the 5/6 port and VDI electrical operation.

Thanks,
Pete

VDI and aux ports are controlled by air pressure from the air pump... not vacuum not electrical activation (well other than the switching solenoid that switches the air pump output to the port actuators and VDI actuator).

an 89 FSM will cover the VDI and Aux port operation... it is the same for all S5 models (89-91).

Thanks, I don't trust the FSM i have sometimes, it seems they left out all of the info on vert's cluster and other things in the '89FSM, but when i go to the dealer and look at thiers it has all that info.

Doesn't sound like you have a FSM (Factory Service Manual), but rather an aftermarket Service manual.

Even the worst aftermarket manuals have the S5 VDI and Aux port stuff

I believe the over rev buzzer buzzes at 8500rpm. As Icemark said no power up there though.

The FSM i have was downloaded from a link in the FAQ for fc section. I think they pulled it down now. It is the 89 FSM by "Scott 89t2", it does have info on the S5 system for aux and vdi, but in my reading in the forums it seemed that the aux and vdi had electric actuators, not a presure activated one. So I was thinking wrong on that.

The FSM is missing a few pages where they discuss some of the vert specific things, Section T PP23 only shows pinouts for the coupe, not for the vert turn/high switch. When troubleshooting my high beams not working, i had to make a few trips to the dealer to make a copy of that section. It does not have any info on the airbag system either, so before replacing the CPU had to make copies of the dealers book.

Thanks,
Pete
