rebuilt engine, cant get it started

weeellll.. ok.
so i rebuilt the engine on my 91 NA and installed it sunday but havent been able to get it to start. it just cranks and cranks. i heard a pop from the exhaust once or twice, but aside from that it doesnt even sound like it is trying to start. the CAS is stabbed at the counterclockwise mark. it looks kinda red but not sure. the gas is old but when sprayed from a bottle it sure as hell blows a nice fireball. =)
with the key on and turning the CAS i can hear the injectors click and a spraying sound from the intake. the spark plugs are throwing two inch sparks during cranking so they're good. this car is automatic or i would have rolled it down the hill already. =( brand new battery today. cranking speed seems ok. with the plugs out and cranking some mist will clear from the engine. compression is good. i checked that out already. ive tried some oil in the chambers. ive tried a few puffs of starting ether... didnt seem to make a difference.

i am freakin stumped here and frankly, its very frustrating. any ideas would be very much welcomed.

man, i am losing my mind over this...

ive got new gas, new battery, new plugs, new wires.

compression is good.

plugs are firing.

fuel rail has 40psi

with pump unplugged cranking the engine drains pressure from the line, so the injectors must be spraying.

i had the leading plugs out and forgot to pull the egi fuse and got to watch some flames shoot out the plug holes, so i know there is at least some kind of combustion going on in there.

earlier today it seemed like it wanted to start, and would increase speed a bit but not up to idle. now after the gas switch (old gas was of questionable age) its back to doing nothing.

with the fuel unplugged it spins faster.

I can't understand why it won't fire up and run! (*bangs head on wall*)

do you guys have any ideas at all? it is automatic but at this point i would almost be willing to try towing it in gear.

what tricks do you use to startup a rebuild?

d00d sorry to jack the thread a little... but I hope I don't have this problem in the newxt couple weeks... engine goes in this weekend and thus far I have done everything right...

I am hoping all these starting issues are going to skip over me.

are you getting fuel to the engine. Did you put the fuel lines to the right spots. check your maf. I had a no start, but it happened to be the mass airflow sensor for s5 and airflow meter on s4.

do you have your fuel lines on right..Feed and return?..sometimes they get mixed and NO start is the result(then again you have a New engine)

why does everyone suggest to check the fuel lines but not say which way to put them?

i wondered about this quite a bit but i believe they are correct. (feed to the front, return to the rear) i have a fuel pressure gauge plumbed into the supply line. it shows 40 psi after the fuel pump has been energized. turning off the pump and cranking again will bleed that pressure down to 0 so im thinkin they have to be on right. otherwise the pressure regulator would be inbetween the pressure gauge and the injectors, and cranking would not reduce pressure.

as far as the air meter goes, i had thought that the engine will actually run for a second without the meter even plugged in? doesnt the computer use a map for cranking and then after a certain rpm or whatever go to closed loop?

NeCr0mStR, good luck with yours. i hope you don't have the trouble i am.

ok, this might be a stupid question, but do you have to jump the initial set coupler when you restab the CAS? i went out and got a timing light which showed my timing off quite a bit. now, mind you, this is only at cranking speeds so ive got no idea how that translates into timing at normal idle speed. i got the timing dead-on finally but still no start.

i guess tomorrow i will start testing all the electrical components

update:

i got it started tonight! =) =) =)
apparently i had drastically underestimated the amount of oil to squirt into the spark plug holes. i have had to re-start it 3 times while trying to set the idle high enough to keep it running. each time I gave it lavish amounts of oil and it works like a charm.

thank you all for your replies!

it kinda scared me how quiet it is. hahaha im used to the 3 inch straight pipe from my turbo.
