Rebuilding a 13b N/A?
Alright. Some of you know about my bad luck as of late with my car. But, hell, it had 168k miles on it.
What all is needed to do a proper rebuild?
Also, is there a good step-by-step in the FSM or the Haynes manual? My dad is a mechanic, but he has never rebuilt one of these motors before. He said we could do it, if we had a manual or something to go off from.
I am going to need a gasket kit and new Apex seals.
I found gasket kits on Ebay for about $170 and Atkins has 2mm 2 piece Apex seal kits for about $240.
A new rear rotor and housing is going to run me roughly $100.
Is there anything else I am going to need that will run me a lot of money?
I can pick up a used motor for $300 + shipping or else rebuild mine. I am trying to weigh out the choices. Go with a used motor for now and wait till it goes up before doing anything else or just spend the little extra and rebuild mine now.

with 170k on the dial, you will need to resurface the irons, replace the oil seals, side seals, all springs and maybe both rotor housings, not just one. The cheapest rebuild will still run you 500-600 bucks.

some website had a good quote...
the most expensive rebuild is a cheap one that fails...
Do it right the first time..
try to get low mileage housings...
new apex seals.. new oil seals.. new side and corner seals.. springs... gaskets...... and TAKE YOUR TIME putting it together

Well, I have officially done the compression test and it failed on the rear rotor.
Time for new housings and a new rotor. I will be getting a couple kits and throwing it together. Wish me luck!

The factory service manual is available online as pdf files or you can purchase a cd of the pdf files.

select how-to and manuals from the menu.
There is also a good video of rebuilding the 13B available at

Good Luck.
