VT rebuild disassembled engine or sell it and get a complete engine?

alright, I have a 1986 N/A FC that I want to swap. my bro just picked up a 1989 FC running a 1986 N/A motor on a S5 t2 harness and ecu. it runs but you can't give it more then 1/3 throttle or it stalls. anyway, he got the car, the S5 t2 that was originally in it that has bad apex seals, and another completely disassembled S5 motor that I think is also a T2 all for $400.

I gave him $100 for the disassembled motor but I am having second thoughts on rebuilding it. I have never rebuilt a rotary before but I have read a lot of rebuild threads and info and think I can do it. Do you think it would be just as well to sell all the parts and just buy another t2 motor for around $1000? If I get a full rebuild kit it will cost around $500-600 so is it really worth it when I can get a used motor for around $1000? He also is giving me the t2 tranny. thanks guys.

Rebuild it. At the very worst, it will be a learning experience. Besides, picking up a TII motor can still be hit or miss. Who says that motor is good?

spec everything out before you make a decision. there may be very little usable parts.

well upon visual inspection and running my hand over the side housings, they seem to be in pretty good condition. I have a friend who is interested in helping with the rebuild so he can learn too and he can re-surface them for free because he works in a machine shop. honestly, the look good the way the are I think. the rotors look good. I am replacing all the seals on the rotors except for the corner seals depending on what they look like during inspection. I am going to upgrade the corner seal springs to the flat springs for added reliability. I heard that you are supposed to use brand new rotor housings on a rebuild but these look really good. depending on the price, I might re use these. all of these things are my major concerns. the other thing is all the bolts are out of it so I am going to have fun trying to organize them into where they go if I reassemble the motor. thanks for your input guys, I'm leaning more toward the rebuild. It will last a lot longer and I know exactly what the internals look like.
