Reasonable rebuild price?

A shop in Upland, CA took a look at my engine and said it was gonna be 2500 for a rebuild with a mild streetport. Apparently they are using some new ceramic apex seals and not the oem mazda seals. They said the mazda seals weren't holding up. Anyways am I the only one that thinks this is a little steep. They quoted me 2000 for a rebuild with streetport about a year ago (i am assuming with the oem mazda apex seals). Any input on pricing or different shops is greatly appreciated.

I think 2000.00 is a better estimate in the States.. If a housing or rotor is bad a little more. Don't know about Canada..

Mazda seals are awesome, they're just trying to get more money out of you I think by claiming the OEM ones "aren't holding up." Go to someone else or be venterous and do it yourself. There is a thread in the archive about rebuild parts/prices when doing it yourself.

Also, Kevin Landers at Rotary Resurrection is awesome, great guy. If you are willing to ship your engine (probably harder from canada) I'd go to him.

Where are you in Ontario? You might want to post in the Canadian forum for rebuild recommendations. I can certainly make a few, and tell you a lot of shops to avoid, if you PM me.

Don't ship your engine halfway accross the continent. We have plenty of good builders here, with lots of experience, who can give you local support.

stock OEM seals are great, he is trying to rip you off or was misinformed. he may know a decent bit about rebuilding but you don't need those seals.

rebuild

I paid $6000 canadian for my engine with new housings and a mild street port, installed. I thought that was pretty steep but what can you do when the guy has your car.

thanks a lot for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it. My plan is to just ask for the rebuild with the mazda seals and see what kinda price he gives me. Hopefully with the port it goes back down to 2000. They are a pretty reputable shop and I would feel bad to have them check my car out and just end up bringing it to another shop. I will still call other shops to see what kinda price they can give me.

PS...sorry for the confusion....i'm in california

check it out. 2k is to steep. Also get as large of a street port as you can get. Mild ain't sh*t. And if this place doing the rebuild doesn't know that oem seals are quaility stuff I would not go with them. Is this a NA or t2?

yeah, 2.5 sounds a little steep, but then again i had a shop by my work that does a lot of auto work tell me it would me about 4g's just to rebuild my engine, no port, no poish, nothing. just pull it, clean it up, and rebuild it with new seals. >.< From what i've seen. 1,500 - 2000 for a good rebuild is a decent price since the seals/gasket kit is around 1,000. 2,500 would be decent if your getting a nice port and polish while its out.
Then again, i'm thinking of rebuilding my own engine. *shrug*

actually i found out that they are using hurley racing seals in their rebuild. Based on all the horror stories i've been hearing about these seals i think i will either be asking them to use OEM mazda seals or rotary aviation apex seals.

well i stopped by the shop today and told them people on forums have been having problems with hurley seals. They seemed to get some what offended when i said this. They said they have had problems with the RA and mazda seals (said the mazda corner seals were too small). Anyways should i just go with mazda seals anyways since i can't see a reason not too and nobody on this forum has complaints about them?

Also if you guys are interested on which shop I am going to feel free to PM me.

Mazda (OEM) seals are great, I'd go with them. RA seals are cheap and strong but haven't been around long enough to know if they are good long term or if they overly wear the housings (some people have speculated they might).

go with Atkins seals then, don't let other people tell you how you want your engine built. how many rebuilds go through these forums? countless...

OEM corner seals too small? this is the first i have heard of that.. i have about 3 dozen sitting in a bag that all have well over 60k miles on them and they are still well within spec. to me they are sounding like they have no clue, IMO it sounds like they have made their share of mistakes and are blaming it on the parts they used. i personally would pull the engine and have a specialist do the rebuild if i were in your shoes, the lowered labor rate would easily cover the shipping.

these people are technically rotary specialists. I don't want to post the shops name because i would hate to deter people away from their business. They believe that the hurley seals are holding up better than the mazda. Your right though...its my car and ill have it done my way. I don't see the need not to use oem mazda stuff. The weird thing is they said 2500 for hurley seals and 2400 for oem mazda stuff to be used for the rebuild. Sounds fishy doesn't it?

I would not take my car there. You're going to regret it.

It doesnt matter how 'nice' they are to you, if they're ripping you off.

Theres better places to go, let this one pass.

you could save yourself about $500 by shipping the engine out for a rebuild. that money would do a bit of nice mods to your car.
