Many years ago I had a pair of 8in Rockford fosgate free air subs in those locations. Filled the towers with poly-fill they pretty muck fit right in after removing the stock enclosures. They weren't bad but don't expect to be able to use any non free air type sub as it would be very difficult to get a good seal.

You could make a small enclosure that drops in. If you sealed off the only way to the rear struts, you'll have to dig/cut out whatever you put in to get to the struts if they or the springs ever go bad or you want to upgrade.

You'd probably want to make the enclosures fill up as much of that space in there as possible, because I doubt there's enough room to make solid boxes with the recommended internal volume for whichever subs you use. However, if you make your enclosures out of thin material it WILL sound like ****.

Keep in mind too, you may run into clearance issues from the hatch struts.
