rear end strength?

ok, so after going through about 7 pages of useless info from the search i'll have to post. does anyone know how much torque the s4 n/a rear end can handle, what about T2 and all the rest?

Anything over 200lb-ft on a NA read diff is asking for trouble.
The turbo one can handle up to 350 lb-ft reliably.
Others will argue otherwise...

well, right now i have the s5 na diff with a tII engine, and it seems to be handling it so far (previous owner did a half assed swap, how the driveshaft is attached is terrifying). Its an open diff though, and im thinking theyre a little bit tougher than the lsd. wheel tends to spin before it can put and real torque down.

Can I put a TII tranny in my '86 NA? I need a new transmission, and I figured a TII tranny would work fine. If I can, how will the preformance of the car change?

hey, thanks RETed thats just what i wanted to hear. one more question, does the t2 diff have the same bolt patterns as the n/a, so i can just switch them out?

The diff will drop right in, but the half axle shafts are different bolt pattern and the pinion is longer (and thus the diff housing is longer) for a turbo - this obviously makes the driveshaft bolt pattern different with a differing length.

My friends at Mazdatrix tell me....

that a driveshaft from an automatic is close enought to correct length to connects a NA Tranny to a TII 3rd member (diff). BUT, you will need to swap out the half shafts from a TII as well as the bolt pattern is indeed different to NA half shafts.

Suggestion, see if you can get a rear diff from Japan. Much more money. But, I remember reading on a previous thread that they are 4.3 gear ratio. Do a search and you'll find what I'm talking about.

THere is a TurboV6 powered GXL pushing in excess of 450hp/450ft/lbs tq thru the stock N/A posi diff with no problems launching on Nitto DR's.

I have a T2 diff and I expect it to handle 600hp and 600ft/lbs of torque launching on slicks soon (upgrading turbo). I have thoroughly abused this diff with about 400hp and launching on 5-10psi off the E-brake on slicks with no problems.

Get an upgraded HD diff mount from Mazda Competition (Mazda USA Motorsports division). They are much stronger and only about $50 made of much harder rubber.
