Couldn't this cranking method allow the thrust bearings to slip out of place? Holding the clutch down only puts pressure on the bearing. The spacer, which keeps it centered, could still slip forward. Normaly, nothing is turning, so it doesn't matter if the spacer slips forward, but if the engine is turning, the bearing could slip down from being rotated.
Oh yeah, to the OP, read this:

You simply get a long breaker bar with socket. Put it on the bolt and lay the breaker bar against the structure. Car out of gear. Turn the key just for a moment and let go. The starter acts like a impact wrench but you don't have to pay a cent for it.
If the engine is out of the car you lock the flywheel down. Use a long breaker bar with socket after heating up the hub bolt with a propane torch. Rap the breaker bar with a twenty lb slege hammer. Not a wind up and slam. Just hit the breakover and it'll break loose the bolt. Hammer acts like.....a impact wrench. Cheap.

Well, your experience is not necessarily indicative of what the majority can expect.
If this guy can drop a bearing while building an engine out of the car, then it's just that much easier for it to happen when doing the job with the engine IN the car.

wow, happy i came across this thread. We struggled with this same issue for about an hour. Torched it, cheater bar, impact... everything. Tried to use the starter trick and it came off easy as pie, layed the breaker bar on the ground and put it in neutral and just gave it a split second jolt and it came right off. The is the easiest and one of the most usefull trick i've heard of in a long time!
