actually, my friend who's also a mechanic at the local 76 knows everything about rx-7's (mostly 1st gens) and is willing to teach me how to make a switch and each and every possible spot to hide it.

ok it turned out to be a base model. i paid 1800 for it. the shifter really worries me because i sometimes accidently downshift to 1st. my mech tells me it's most likely just the shifter and not the tranny but it'd be a good idea to swap the tranny. the shocks are gone, the ride is uber-bumpy. all i can say is, this beats my 60hp CRX.

YOu can put on the Miata Short throw..found on E-abay ..you still have to get the upper bushing though..and it may be a tight shift but can be fixed with a little ingenuity..like using the washers between the Top plate and the spacer to give the bushings a little more room so the shifter can Move and Pivot without being sandwiched from the Bushings having excess pressure exerted so that it Doesn't go Super tight..(do a search on forum..Miata short throw Write-up..it will explain all that you need to know..) I installed my Miata shortthrow and I like it..it's notchy but you know when you are in gear..Click,click..

ok i had the shifter boot removed and examined the plate underneath. everything was tight and good. could it be the shift linkage? the transmission feels fine.
