Wow, the aftermarket ones must have been better. The mazda "authorized/warenteed" version has 1/4 of the glass blocked by those 2 side frame pieces.

Tou would have to add additional reinforcements in the chassis, ala convertible to add true t-tops, then the hassle og=f getting the glass formed, the locking mechanisms made, NOT AN INEXPENSIVE PROPOSITION.

I wonder if it weighs any less, probably more actually. I just weighed the stock assembly while reading this post. 27lbs. I swear it feels a lot heavier though!
I thought about Lexan or carbon fiber. But after looking at it I don't think the actual metal skin is the heavy part...
