I've still got my stock CD/Tape Radio. I don't know if it will fit in your '90, I assume so. I pulled out of my '91 to install my Pioneer system. It worked good, CD skipped over bumps though.

radio
Jason- "for looks"
note my sig says bone stock for the 90 GTUs. One of only 100 made, on cover of John Matras' book Sports Car Color History RX-7. Original owner. Aftermarket stuff detracts from value of collectable cars. I plan to keep it long enough to be worth some $, don't want to mess it up- even if the newer radios are better.

I have a Type 3 Tape/Radio that just came out of a 1990 GXL less than a month ago. It's in perfect working order, and in good shape. Buttons still have all their graphics on them, but there is some wear and tear from 12 years of use. Radio and Tape worked perfectly. It was only removed to install my Kenwood CD head. Features a 7 band Graphic EQ, as well as all the usual stuff. Professionally removed; was not cut.

But just in case you decide you some quality sounds, it’s very easy to install a new stereo in these cars without cutting a single panel or wire. A custom face plate holds the DIN-sized head unit and the wiring connects straight into the factory plugs. The original could be reinstalled in about half an hour. Just an option...

Ron, I'm with you. I also want to keep it bone stock. For what it may be worth to you, the non-CD radio/tape standard with I think 89 - 92 was made by Clarion. Heat and sun light destroys the LCDs. I tried to have one fixed and replacement Clarion LCDs no longer available. The units with CD players were made by Pioneer and LCDs much better.
Now have the Pioneer AE CD/tape/radio from a '91 with the usual "skips with a bump" syndrome which at times shuts off with a bump. Repair shop with a rep for doing great things can get the lazer for it but cannot find the alignment harness that must be used to install it. The laser costs about $85.00 without labor. The harness (new) is about $100.00 but shop cannot find one not even a used one. But get this. The Pioneer alignment procedure that must be followed to install the laser is twenty (thats 20) pages long. The shop I brought it to is miffed it will take so much work to replace the dang thing. They told me that if they find the harness they will squize my lazer install between customers.
Just an FYI for those committed to maintaining a certain "purity" of the original second gens.

stock
jodoolin- Just a non-RX-7 anecdote re keeping collector cars stock. A few days ago, I parked next to a Ford Thunderbird, probably a 1958 or 1959 (not sure of year)that was *immaculate* down to the continental kit for the spare tire. It had the top down and I was admiring the interior, when it dawned on me that it was not just a convertible, but a retractable hardtop! There probably are less than a dozen of them left in any kind of condition, much less showroom, like this was. Then I saw them........friggen JC Whitney quality side view mirrors with some kind of cutesey little non-ford emblem on them. This guy has a car worth probably $75-90K and he puts those POS mirrors on the car. If he ever takes it to a first-rate car show they will tar and feather him.

Trying to keep it origional.
The tape players on both my 89 and 91 verts have given up the ghost. Everything else works.
Tape loads, then display blinks dimly.
Any Factory Manuals for a 91 on Web?
Mahalo!

Downwind, the repair shops I had look at the Clarion
(Charlotte, North Carolina) and the Pioneer (Grand Rapids, Michigan) had manuals for the ones they looked at. I suspect any radio/TV repair shop certified by Clarion/Pioneer has the manual you may be looking for. They are not generally large so maybe you can get copies if you say "Pretty Please" and palm them with a few bucks. Good luck.
