what's wrong with the Haynes? Doesn't it tell you to pull the rad & eng block drains, flush the rad, put the drains back in, and refill? Are you trying to get fancy & do an "engine running" flush?

it's one of the four "bolts" holding the left engine mount bracket on (actually goes "through" the bracket)...if ya really need to know which one, I can run out to the car in a minute, not too hard to tell, though

man, if ya want to worry about it, that's fine, but if you or the previous owner(s) haven't taken care of the coolant properly and the aluminum rotor housings are corroded to hell, there's nothing you can do about it now...But, if ya want to flush with DISTILLED water for a while (circulating while engine is running), that's O.K....I learned a long time ago to not put any "stop leak" or any other BS in the cooling system...

Just keep it simple- drain eng & rad, check out the coolant visually, put the plugs back in, and refill the system...warm it up, let it circulate (upper rad hose will get HOT), shut her down, let her cool off, and top the coolant off/ fill the resevoir up to proper mark...I've never had to mess with the bleeder screw on mine, but some guys do...if the coolant really looks like CRAP coming outta there (rusty, etc), repeat the procedure after another 100 miles or so...

I've flushed using a garden hose, and I might see a few solids. I'm doing Prestone's sodium citrate drive-around treatment to the VW Passat v6 right now, and I'm amazed at the muck it has suspended -- awaiting a clean flush I now recommend flushing out the coolant, then adding a stripping flush like Prestone, then accumulate a few hours drive time with the heater open to clean its lines, flush again with the garden hose, then add your favorite coolant cocktail.

Get prestone super flush, should clean out the gunk a little bit, and its safe for the coolant seals, it has instuctions on the bottle. Also you should turn the heater on max when doing this.

It does not make any sense to use garden hose water to either flush or fill a cooling system. Always use distilled water. Its less than a buck a gallon. Drain system, fill with distilled H2O and add any reputable radiator flush/cleaner. Follow manufacturer's instructions. Drain system, flush again with distilled water til clean and do a final drain. Fill with one gallon of green anti-freez if you are going 50/50 and cap off with a galon of distilled water. Voila all done.

A second thought. I have always dropped the under cover to get at not only the radiator drain but also to clean out the debris that accumulates between the radiator and condenser. I was amazed at the crap that had loged in there. I used a long ruler to fish it out and a gental high pressure hose for a final cleaning.

Too many minerals and impurities. I mean distilled water is only like $1/gal
