The pre-silencer is need to activate the aux ports on a 86-88 non turbo (or you will need to jury rig/come up with some other method of activation such as an air pump and switching solenoid).

I have an RB header on my 88 GTU. The thing is loud as hell, you don't want a straight pipe with it. The previous owner had the RB header and presilencer with Apexi N1 dual exhaust, which is a very loud exhaust system. I went to a local muffler shop and had them weld in a high flow catalytic converter. It's still really really loud but I don't have the whole car vibrating when it reaches 3000rpm on the highway.
EDIT: My 6 ports were wired open when I got the thing anyway, and I'm not that concerned about getting them to work actuate.

You should be concerned about that. You're throwing away the low end power that the system is designed to give you. Plus you are gaining nothing in the mid/high end if they compared to a working system.

Look for a used one. That would be my first choice if I couldn't afford it new. Heck try looking for both parts used it will likely save you about a hundred dollars. Cheaping out and doing things the wrong way gets you in trouble sometimes with break-downs or part failures. A lot of cheap components don't hold up well enough in our rotary setups so be carefule what you pay for so that you don't end up throwing your money away on a 20-30-40 even 50 dollar glass pack. Buy something with Strainless steel packing not fiberglass, if you can't find the money for an RB component.

You can put a straight pipe on, but it will be LOUD - the exhaust pulses from a NA are intense compared to a normal piston engine.
Cheap exhaust parts with rotary engines are false savings - the higher exhaust temperature has a tendency of melting or burning through cheap exhaust pieces - the RB presilencer is designed for this (and holds up fine, I might add), but a cheap glasspack will melt in short order.

just shell out the money for the RB Presilencer...... it fits and uses the stock mounting points... and it works... anything else you try to rig up is only going to end up pissing you off and only saving 20-30 bucks in the long run..
and... don't even bother trying to use something thats packed with fiberglass.. it'll melt out in a heatbeat......

I paid $80 for my pre-silencer shipped. The only problem it has is a broken stud which I'm having a buddy at work that's taking it to a shop one of his friends owns that does alot of jeep work and he's gonna use a plasma cutter to slice the flange off and I already have the replacement studs from RB that just need to be dropped in and re-welded. ![Big Grin](https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Don't let your exhaust go ghetto either, everyone is right here. Mine has a major leak behind the main convertor and a shot seal off the thermal reactor (I really need a header
). Since those two leaks developed (the cat one is thanks to it splitting under the split air tube inside the cat) I have developed a very nasty 3,000rpm hesitation and my car dogs horribly.

I had an RB header with straight pipe and dual ebay straight through mufflers, and yah it's loud. Also had removed exhaust diffusers and ported intake/exhaust. Video if you care to hear how loud it is.

To answer your question, yes you can put something in place of the RB presilencer, like straight pipe or a muffler, whatever. But if you do that, like Icemark stated, you'll have to find another way to activate your aux ports.
