I have a haynes manual and it just says take trans out blah blah. I am looking under the car and i see that the starter looks to be built into the trans. Does anyone know how many bolts and do i have to take off the starter. I have a 1988 gxl.
Thanks

Judging by your post, you have a long road ahead of you.....
The starter has 2 bolts. After that, there are 5 more bolts connecting the trans to the engine.
In this order:
Start by pulling off the shifter boot and taking the shifter out, then drain the oil from the trans., unbolt the exhaust (you can leave the manifold on as well as the precat (or the header if you have one), the heatshields, the driveshaft, disconnect the wiring to the trans and starter, unbolt the clutch slave cylinder, unhook the ground from the top of the tranny to the firewall, then hold the trans with a jack and unbolt the transmission "bracket" (holds the tranny up), then you basically slide it back and lower it at the same time.
That's pretty much the procedure.

The tranny can be hard to get off of the rear of the motor. That trans case is aluminum and the alignment pins on the rear iron like to stick. A deadbloc hammer and some elbow grease can usually get them free. If it wasnt getting Little 500 week, I would come up to Indy and lend a hand. Its not a terribly difficult job though.

yep just let her come back slowly while shimming the tranny left and right while pulling it back. make sure you drain it before pulling it or will end up like my *** covered in fluid and its not easy to get out of hair, off body, throw clothes away.

Right on Shainiac. I am usually at the little 500 but this year i have to work. I have been trying to find some local rx-7 owners but havent been having any luck, On the other hand man it is great to drive a car that you dont see all the time. Pm me sometime and we can try and meet up for a cruise.
