QUICK HELP!! NPT and ????
I am trying to install a new water temp guage for my S5 NA. I just got the old sender out and the new one WONT GO IN!!
What's this NPT crap!?!!
HOW can i make it fit in right. It seems to fit nicely into the knock sensor hold, so does the stock thermo sender.!!! I can see NO reason why it's not going in!!
QUESTION : does the stock sender work the same way??? can i just hook up the new guage to it and have it work???
THANK FOR ANY HELP

NPT = National Pipe Thread
It's the standard U.S. thread they used to hook-up pipes.
Your stock sensor is a metric thread.  Obviously, you've found out, it doesn't fit.
You really need the proper size NPT "tap" to ream the threads out so that your NPT sensor can fit in.

Wait, if this really is a 1/8"NPT-27 fitting, then the threaded end is like 1/4" in diameter?
This thing will NOT fit in the stock water temp sensor hole, if you're talking about the MAIN water thermo sensor in the back of the water pump housing; you need this sensor anyways for the stock ECU.  You've got the stock water temp sensor for the stock gauge in the side of the engine, but do you really want to disable the stock gauge?  This means you'll need to drill and tap a hole for the new sensor...
I tend to put aftermarket gauge temp sensors here...  (The temp sensor is the one with the smaller black wire in the middle of the pic.)

whoa whoa whoa.
I bought this from tmak26b and he said it fit fine into his engine w/o any kind of adaptation.
It's the hole RIGHT next to the oil pressure sender, a little below the fuel lines. NOT the thermosenor the ECU needs. Single black wire comes from it. tmak said you didnt need to drill any new holes or anything, just swap in the new one. I don't care if the stock guage doesnt work, i want to read the more accurate AutoMeter one
Now i am confused

Ok, you realize this is going to KILL the stock temp gauge, right?
All you need is some teflon tape...
Put the teflon tape on the sensor threads
CRANK the sensor into the hole as hard as you can
That should work and seal everything up.
Keep in mind, once you do this, you can't put the stock sensor back into the hole...
Does that make any sense?

OMG!! WHAT a difference the piping tape made! Put that vynl tape on there and it went right in. Took some hard cranking though, but it's in there. .
Ahhhh.... now all i have left is easy wiring.
