Question for people running Taurus e-fan
Hi guys,
I have a question for those of you who are using an e-fan from an 88-95 3.8L Ford Taurus. What gauge wire are you using? What size fuse (I read that the fan pulls 80A on start up!)? What type of fuse and holder?
I already have an e-fan installed, but it is not doing the job and I need to get one with a shroud. Also, when I was removing the old one I noticed that the fuse holder I was using looked like it had started to melt although the fuse itself was still good. It is a glass cylendar fuse and it is in a clear plastic tubualr holder.
Oh, the fan is being switched by my haltech.

I guess thats raises another good question...can I get away with using the low speed only or should I wire it up for hi speed. I'm sure I won't be able to wire it for both as I don't think the Haltech can do that.

Dump that crappy fan and get a 1998 (or so) Mercury Villager Fan,,it FITS Perfect on a KOYO rad.
and I would use a relay to Operate the fan.By the way they take less power to operate and the Shroud is already ON the damn thing,so you WIN/WIN!
Look up a Efan install on wwww.aaroncake.net you can use his schematics to either hook up to a Switch,.a Thermo switch or Ahem!..a haltech!

Im also using 10GA wire on my taurus fan. I have the ecu turn on the low speed and then if I need high I have it wired to a toggle switch. Im using a 30/40A relay for low speed and a 40/50A for high. Here is a wiring diagram for reference if you wanted to do something similar.

I'm running a Fluidyne rad. Do you know if the dimensions are the same as the Koyo? Is the Mercury Villager fan a single speed or two speed like the Ford? Are you using 10 gauge wire? How big is your fuse?
I already have everything wired from my...ahem...Haltech to a relay and then to the fan. I just wanted to make sure I used the proper gauge wire and proper sized relay.

Finally! Someone who knows how much current the Merc Villiager fan pulls. I have asked in the original thread and no one responded.
How many amps does it pull?

I used 8 gauge for all connections on the taurus fan for my car. According to http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm it's good for 73 amps, which is rated a tad higher than the relay for hi-speed activation.
How I wired mine was to come on using the s4 OE thermoswitch on low speed, but switch to high speed when the A/C is turned on or I hit the manual override switch. Currently, neither the A/C nor the override switch are in the car, so the high speed circuit has an alligator clip and goes straight to the battery to turn the fan on high. Here's the schematic:
For S5 cars, you can eliminate the ground relay and wire the thermoswitch straight to the fan and ECU (for idle-up functionality) as it provides a ground at the trigger temperature instead of removing the ground like the s4 ones do. Personally, I'd still use a relay on it though, to put the wear on the relay's contacts instead of the thermoswitch's ones. 40+ amps can really corrode a switch after all. Just ask any s4 guy about their power window switches lol.
Do note that the relay colored in red is a high power one and the power terminals on it are 3/8" wide, instead of the normal 1/4" wide. Pretty sure I pulled it from a Taurus or Contour, but you can definitely buy them new on ebay.
You can purchase the female spade terminals for these at autozone and they're good for 10 gauge wire. Trim a few strands from the 8-gauge stuff and you're good to go

Jeebus, you powering your fan with the Grand Coulee generators, or what?
I've now installed four Taurus/Volvo and Volvo/Volvo fan/control setups and none have ever popped the 30A fuse that comes standard.

Nice write up on the install!
Does the high speed come on if you are idle for awhile or is the low speed good enough to keep the engine cool? I only ask because I'd like to continue using my Hlatech as the trigger instead of adding another water temp. sensor. So if I can get away with only wiring up the low speed setting that would be nice!

Can you use the thermo sensor for low speed, and then use your haltech for high speed?
I have never used a haltech and am unsure how it interfaces, but I'm guessing that output is adjustable (ie what temp it triggers it). If that is the case, with a few relays and some wire and you should be able to run low & high speed on your fan.
Wire Size is as much determined by run (length) as amp draw. If your run is under 3' I would guess 10 awg would be okay, if you're going farther run 8 awg.

I'll probably just go with the low speed. The Haltech only has 1 set point for on and another for off. So if I wanted to use the high speed as well I'd need an additional thermo sensor which is what I'm trying to avoid. It going to be a little while before I have the car back together anyway, but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Dont know I thought it was a radio shack one. it would get real hot and stay on. worked fine for about 5 months though.. maybe the relay was just old then idk. not an epert when it come to electronics.

If these are dual-speed fans (and the 'low' speed doesn't pull much current, why not just wire it in one of two fashions:
A.) Low is always on and High is thermostatically triggered;
B.) Fan is off, low is termo-trigger and High is manually switched?

Hey guys, forgot to ask if you had to upgrade you alternator to an FD of if the FC is good enough. I don't have AC, but if its a rainy night I want to make sure it can handle the headlights, wipers and defog all at the same time.
As for putting in a switch for the high speed, I might do that, but if its not necessary, I prob won't bother...although if I find that the low speed doesn't cut it in the humidity I may just wire up the high speed instead.

EDIT: Just looked up a fuse box from a 97 Taures. 40A fuse.
