question about my transmission....

Ok i was driving down the road and all of a sudden i hear a clunk and my rear tires lock up and i come to a screeching halt!?..I then put the tranny i nuetral and go to start the car and the starter pushes the car forward!!! like its in gear. I decide to push the clutch in and start it and it starts fine i put it in first and rev it up and it dies? car doesnt move an inch at all..? I try this in all gears and its stuck ?....i even put it in first and reved it to 5k and it just bogged the engine down and stalled?

Now i pushed it home??..yeah it rolls just fine but can anyone please tell me what exactacly could be wrong? im droping the tranny tomarrow morning please tell me if there is anything i can look at or for?....
thanks guys..

hmmm pilot bearing anyone? I had something similar cept the rear didn't lock on me. mine just refused to shift into any gear. If I tried starting in neutral it would start and run but I couldn't shift into any gear without stiff resistance and a ton of grinding. If I tried starting while it was in gear the starter would move the car. After towing it home I dropped the tranny and come to find out the brand new pilot bearing we installed was completely trashed nothing but bits n pieces sace the outer shell which is still inside the motor. waiting on new one and puller to come before doing anything else

If thats the case then youve made my day!! if it wasnt 105 out right now ide go ahead and drop it.

It will go into gear when running but as soon as i let up on the clutch no matter what the engine rpm it will stall?

Ok i have removed everything and when i removed the driveshaft i was able to handturn the tranny splines that the driveshaft slids into...So i guess this means that its not locked up huh? All i have to do is put the jack under the tranny and lower it down tomarrow ill let you guys know what happens!!

Any suggestions ?...

Alright guys i lowered the tranny and i went and checked the pilot bearing and its not there anymore ?...seems to have destroyed itself. could this be whats wrong with it?? also i can turn the front splines on the tranny and it makes a clanking noise i think its low on fluid but any ideas on what that can be?

Make sure that you can get the rear tires to rotate by cranking on the driveshart/differential mating flange (not sure what it's called). If you can't (it'll probably be stiff at least but should turn) then you've got a problme with your diff. Probably not based upon what I've heard you say, but worth double checking.

Although your pilot bearing is trashed, I really doubt that's the cause of your problem. Locking up while driving with the clutch engaged is a pretty big issue. The pilot bearing only comes into play whent the clutch is dis-engaged. Sounds a little more to me like something went bad in your tranny. Especially since you are hearing a clanking noise in the tranny. That's usually pretty bad. When mine was clanking, it was missing some teeth and had a broken shifter fork.

Also make sure that your rear brakes aren't somehow frozen closed.

Just some thoughts.

I doubt it's the pilot bearing. The pilot would quickly spin itself to death if it locked up, and you would never notice.

Make sure the transmission spins freely in all gears and neutral. Clanking sounds are bad. Drain the fluid and look for metal.

Check the rear end. Turn the pinion and make sure both tires turn, then check the diff action by stopping each tire with your hand.

Also check the u-joints on the driveshaft, though I doubt that's it.
